Security barrel for coyote with #4 buckshot?
« on: July 19, 2014, 03:01:23 PM »
Does anyone have experience with patterns of #4 buckshot out of a short cylinder bore? I use my Mossberg 500 for coyotes quite a bit as a backup to the 223 since a lot of the area I hunt they can pop up super close in the blink of an eye. I want to swap to a tactical/thumbhole/pistol style stock and a shorter barrel for the quick stuff. I just dont want to limit myself too much on range. I would love to get a turkey style barrel so its still short but has chokes but I dont really have the cash. I can get a plain jane cylinder barrel for a decent price though. I shoot #4 buckshot more often than anything else. What would be my max range for a 12 gauge 3 inch shell of #4 out of a security style barrel on a coyote size target? How wide would you say the shot pattern would spread at 20 yards? 30? 40?

Your pattern will open up way to much IMHO. Stick to a gun that has a choke for what you are wanting to do.

I agree with Carp, but, the only way you will know for sure is to pattern the gun.

I load #4 buck for coyote and I have done some patterning with cylinder bore. In my shotgun I've gotten a 20" pattern at 25 yards.  Really the only way to know is to try it with your gun.  Mine patterns best with improved mod. Giving me a 20" pattern at 40 yards. Just my exp.

I used my HD 20" barrel on my Moss 835 with 0 buckshot i poured and store bought #4 The store bought spread a little more than Jasnt did. My home pour I stack the 9 pellets INSIDE a shotwad so that the pellets don't get spin. I've killed yotes at 35-40 yards with that setup.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.
