Quick Scope Mounting Question
« on: August 01, 2014, 02:18:17 PM »
I just picked up this Marlin X7 and am popping a nice Burris on it for my girlfriend. She is fairly small (5'2") and the length of pull is a bit long for her on a full sized gun. Although, she has shot a full sized gun all her life (dads guns). Ultimately, someday, I'll probably modify the stock, but for now we are going to get this one ready for this season. Then over the winter and spring I'll modify it.

Anyhow, with the scope in a "normal" position for my standards, she has to crane her neck forward a bit to get the objective to open up full for her. Is that the right word? Anyhow, you know what Im saying. When she places the gun in a comfortable shooting position for her, she doesn't get the full picture through the scope... she has to move her face forward on the stock. Other than looking a little funny, is there any reason not to move it back some for her? Its not a safety deal, as she is still a safe distance from it. It just sits back further than I have seen.

On the other hand, I cant quite tell if maybe she just isn't in the right position. She shot my daughters rifle last year, which I cut 1 1/4 inches off the stock... and she still complained about not being able to get the full picture without craning her neck forward. hmmm...

Thoughts?

Thank you,

HS

I'd move it back as far as possible without risking getting the dreaded scope mark on her eyebrow when it recoils.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

It helps to use a scope with lots of eye relief, which the best scope for maximum eye relief is Leupold. What kind of scope is it?

Also, I agree, move it back as far as possible.

What kind of mount are you using? The Marlin X7 should use the same mount as a Winchester model 70, at least as a two piece. Leupold makes mounts with extensions, allowing you to bring the rings further back if necessary if the scope is already as far back as possible in the current mounts.

It's a Burris... Don't know model. 3-9x40. I've shot it on my 300 for many years, but don't hardly shoot that gun anymore.

The gun came with a mounting rail that does allow me to move the scope back a fair bit. So... I'll move it to where she needs it... Unless I decide she isn't holding her head  "right".

Thank you
