Possible Advice for Deer area #1050 N. Spokane

Along with a lot of other people, I drew a Second Deer Special Permit.  Unfortunately, I didn't draw Mt. Spokane, as I'd hoped.  I drew Spokane North.  Many years ago, I used to hunt the northern borders of this area but it's all changed now.  So, I humbly come to you seeking advice.  The issues are a bit complicated though.  We drew as a group of 4 people.  However, now there's a chance that some of the others won't be able to come over from the west side.  I plan to hunt with my bow, the other 3 will be using rifles or muzzle loaders, if they're able to come over.

I haven't purchased a GMU map yet, but intend to, hoping it'll show me public lands in the area.  In the meantime, can anyone give me any tips, directions, advice, etc. for this area?  I do plan to do some knocking on doors, attempting to obtain permission from private property owners, but just haven't had an opportunity to do so yet.  With my daughter's crazy dance schedule, camping/scouting time has been very limited! UGH.

Any help anyone can offer is GREATLY APPRECIATED!  If I'm able to return the favor, with deer/elk advice, in more NE areas, I'll happily do so!

I would call the regional office over there and talk to the wildlife biologist.  In september they will start compiling a nuisance deer list and will help put you in contact with homeowners.  The biologist should also point out general locations for you to focus on.  Then you can narrow it down and look at the spokane county assessor's website from there to get property info.  I did this process for 1060 for this year and found more than enough acreage to hunt.  Good luck!

Go to the WDFW office by the YMCA in the Valley. They should already have a list of property owners. Also, if you purchase an Inland Empire Paper permit, there is a large piece of land on Lake View Rd. Follow Campbell north off Trent and it will take you there. Please pack your garbage out if go. It's on the verge of being shut down due to everyone leaving their TV's, refrigerators, cars and other BS they decide to take up there and shoot.

Most land owner will let you hunt, some wont.  Some are AH, you get the point. 

Farm lands are mainly open and flat and deer seems to know what is up and stay about 400 or further away.  You may want to consider using a rifle. 

There are lots of houses in the area so be sure that your back ground is clear of house or building.

The county assessor's office now charges for that information...ugh.  I remember getting copies of county assessor maps, from their office years ago, for nothing but the cost of making the copy.

Thanks for such detailed advice!  I wasn't aware that IEP had any land that didn't include Mt. Spokane (off limits) that far south, except in Idaho.  I always pack out anything I pack in, along with whatever else I happen to pick up along the way.  The "garbage" that leaves garbage laying around really ticks me off!  GRR

Ehhh, I don't consider a landowner an AH if they won't let me hunt.  They have their reasons and I completely respect that!

A lot of that area is farm land but not much of it is wide open. There's plenty of forested area that hold a lot of deer.  Honestly, as long as I have areas to hunt, I don't see myself having any problems getting within 40 yards of a doe.  In fact, every deer I've ever shot with a rifle, except for 2, were shot within 40 yards.  I'll stick to my archery plans.

I drew the same tag as well. Not the one I wanted either, but it'll do. I used the onX Hunt app to narrow down an area right after the results came out. The app is very informative, several different layers to use, GMU's, landowner (with plot sizes, names, addresses, ect.), government lands, USGS topos, satellite imagery, and much more. I've actually used their 7 day trial, last year, on an Android device.  It failed miserably.  I contacted them and was able to convince them to now count it as my one time trial, since I had a phone which they said it should work on.  I've been meaning to give it another shot.

Do you use the Desktop, Garmin or Android/Iphone version?  I don't own a Garmin.  I assume you've paid for the premium version, since you're able to get landowner info?

I did read something about how it didn't work so well in the past. I'm using it on Iphone/Ipad and it seems to be really accurate/detailed. I typically work with that and Google Earth (plus some paper topos) at the same time because G.E. can get a lot more detailed zooms on slope angles, gullys, benches, ridges, ect.  Yes I did upgrade, I was surprised how much info one can get, short of phone numbers(which in some cases you can do a search for online). I did some accuracy checking on some family and friends land, the boarders came out about as perfect as possible. I have enough trust in it at this point, plus where I am hunting there are fences, just so long as I don't cross them I feel comfortable. Good luck!

What's your experience been, using it when you don't have cell signal?  That's been my problem with several of those Apps I've used, even ones I've paid for.  They state that they'll work on satellite even in an area of no cell signal.  My experience has been hit and miss, with them actually working.  This is on the Tmobile network.

Just the name.  I used google from there...

That's what I was getting too, but paying for it.  However, this was before Google existed...haha.  I'd get printed 7 minute maps, with landowner names.

Your correct I should clarify.  I had one land owner claiming that the deer was hers because she raised them from a baby.   Had another yell and scream at me for asking about hunting, and says "don't you see my grand kid is hunting"  so I ask the guy were was his grand kid, replies 300 yards into the woods. 

99.9% of farm land owners are very nice, I just so happen to run across some that are AH, just saying.

Looks like there might be some timberland in that area, but not much.  Using the go hunt app on the wdfw site.
