Scott and Travis Go To Colorado
« on: August 04, 2014, 07:01:10 PM »
Went down and scouted a new elk spot in Colorado...drove to the trailhead at 3am, then the climb to 12k began at 9 am the next day.

Some videos I'll post later, including the elk herds, some crazy weather, and improvised skiing.

I'll also mention that the elevation is no joke. We woke up with headaches every day and it took us a solid day to recover once we hit 12k.

Strangely we didn't see any deer it we did see about 225 elk, couple 5s, couple 4s, and 20 or so spikes, but the big boys were hiding.

Completely stoked for September.

The headaches came from the firewater :)

Awesome guys. Scott, you look pretty miserable in that first pic. How did 12K affect your breathing?

We were out of breath pretty quickly starting around 11k. Got significantly better yesterday.

A little trick to help with the elevation is to take a few aspirin or ibuprofen every day for a week before you go into high elevation and while your up there. Hydration is a big part of it too.

please explain how taking aspirin or Ibuprofen for a week will help? Both these meds have a half life of 2-4 hrs and being out of your system in 8 hrs. They do not work like antibiotics. You would gain the same effect by taking them hr before.

Touché it seams you are correct sir. Week before seams to be bs but taking ibuprofen just before and continually while at altitude seams to be the ticket...

This actually worked really well.  We both woke up with headaches daily, and popped a couple of IBP.  Went away almost instantly.  We hadn't read that article, but IBP is usually a staple for me in the mountains anyways...

Maybe taking the ibuprofen for a week has a cumulative effect on thinning your blood.
