Mt. View Bull Tag
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:40:59 PM »
I finally drew a Mt. View bull tag. ( 19 points ) I went down and scouted the area and found that the public land was extremely steep. More than I remembered. Does anyone know if there is a private landowner who charges and access fee to hunt in that area. Being in my late 50s, I need flatter ground to hunt. Yes, I know that the game department owns about a section in that area and the 4-0 ranch is not good for my tag.

You used 19 pts to hunt Mt View? Isn't Grouse Flats in that unit? Mark Huett owns or leases land GF land and has the hunting rights. There's some state land there that isn't steep, and a bunch of private land. The land north of 4-0 didn't used to be posted and its in 5 ac parcels. The ridge east of the canyon wasn't to bad of a walk 40 years ago. You could hunt the top edge of the canyon and hope for the best. The rancher east of 4-0 sold hunting rights 40 years ago, I think his name was Flynn.
Good luck

Grouse flats rec area is state land and is flat, but most of it is a huge crp field and u gotta think that it gets hit pretty hard with spike hunters and some bull tags and easily push the elk into surrounding private.

Also is it bad he used 19 pts in this unit???

Using 19 pts in this unit is not bad at all, if you look at the stats it rivals Dayton, other than the terrain is tougher

I'd highly recommend getting some horses lined up for this hunt. Nothing wrong with using 19 points for this hunt. I know guys that put in for it this year with 19 points and still couldn't get drawn. Good luck on your hunt!

Grouse Flats is pretty well locked up these days. Mark Hewitt, as far as I know, has been out of the area for probably 10 years. His property was mainly, maybe all in Oregon anyway. The guy who bought it also bought a bunch of property in WA and now probably owns close to half of Grouse Flats. I don't think he is worth trying though if you think $1500 is too much for the 4-0 property. This guy is big business and probably makes that type of income by the hour!

As mentioned, the Game land is not much to get excited about, especially during the rifle season. By that time most big bulls have left the flats and cows and are in the steep country. My father lived on Grouse flats for 15 years, so I know it about as good as anyone. Probably the easiest public land terrain with much chance at a nice bull would be the base of Mt Misery, which is basically the north end of Grouse Flats. You would be hunting up hill this way, so the pack out would be down hill. You could camp at the mentioned game land (one of the reasons the elk may not be there is campers) and can glass it from near by.  This really is your only public option at an easy pack out (comparitively speaking) that you have in this unit.

Also, this tag is worthy of 19 points. You really have no control of how many years it will take, you just have to take it when you get it. Good luck and keep us up to date.

Mike Burns is his name. He bought all of Marks property and a whole bunch more. Impossible to get a hold of him. His office (Blue North Fisheries) and main home are in Seattle. Like fly4fish said, there is plenty of public land to hunt. I would definitely make arrangements with a packer to get your elk out in the event that you are successful. Good luck. There are some great bulls in the unit you just have to get in after them.

If I had 19pts I'd be applying for lick ck. Does Ross Howard still own land in Grouse flats? At one time Mark was leasing it. Kessler has some land there but I don't know if he allows hunters.
