Radios?
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:15:44 AM »
I am buying a set of 2-way radios for our business, and am sure they will be used in the field as well.  Any reccomendations?

A bit of a Thread Jack, because I have had multiple people tell me this in the past, but there is nothing in the Regs about using radios... kidding right?

Midlands worked the best for us. The motorolas were horrible.

It is legal to use radios while hunting, you just can't use them to guide people to animals.

http://wdfw.wa.gov/help/questions/82/Can+I+use+two-way+radios+while+hunting%3F

Sounds like it is legal,  but open to interpretation for ethics.
Not sure if the law recently changed. Few years back I had a warden ask to see my radio & asked what I was using it for. It was off, but he still gave me the don't use it talk.
We use Rhinos or midlands & mainly for meeting up when separated.

I take back my earlier post, this makes it sound legal.

I guess, I'm a bit of a dumb ares. How would the state know? If a radio was used or not, for unethical purposes. Justa question, I have swirling around in my grey matter...............

They are legal, and all have vastly overstated ranges. You might get 36 miles on the moon, but in dense canopy 1/2 mile is more realistic. Ridge to ridge you can get 10 miles or more under optimal conditions.

What are you trying to do for business?  All the following are good suggestions for recreation and hunting.  They are not really business style radios.  What kind of business areyou going to use them for?  I have been in the 2-way radio business for 27 years now and i would be happy to help you out.  I just need more info.

I've used various radios over the years, Motorola, Midland, Radio Shack, Garmin and in various bands VHS, FRS, GMRS. The 5 watt VHS Motorola and Midlands worked the best. There is no privacy, you might as well assume you are being listened to. When you are sure you are being listened to it can be fun though and used to your advantage if you play it right  :chuckle:
