Didn't think they allowed camping in the past.  Everyone always camped on the state land parcels.

Only those who want to lose their keys and their right to hunt there.  :dunno:

I'm all confused. I keep hearing that you have to buy a Weyerhaeuser tag to hunt the Winston unit? I never seen what they own. People seemed like they camped all over.

You couldn't camp before, so what's the difference? If you want to camp, do it on the state land. Be sure you have a Discover pass. We got checked for it a couple years ago while camping up there.

I do agree, though, it would be nice if they'd allow camping, especially now that you're paying $150 for access. I'm not sure why they don't.   :dunno:

Since it seems that Hancock is the model company for timber fees, I would assume they won't allow camping because Hancock doesn't allow camping under their general access fee. Hancock just recently started to allow camping but you have to purchase an additional camping permit on top of your regular access permit.

I bought a snoqualmie permit this year for Hancock. I went and checked out the designated "camping areas", they are all just muddy rock pits. I would not spend my money to camp in that crap! Not sure if it's the same on weyco, but it's not like you could just camp anywhere even if you bought the camping permit..

I remember when I was a wee tot, my foster parents used to take us camping to the scenic muddy rock pits.  We used to look forward to it every year.  Bouncing on the abandoned mattresses, collecting discarded Rainier cans . . . and the eventual tetanus shots.  Ah.  Good times.

I highly recommend it over the much more crowded garbage dumps, even though those are free and filled with treasures.

I remember back in the day buying the 30.00 champion paper permit. There designated camping areas where all pretty good and they even supplied us with free cut and split firewood for camp fires.......

The rules and regs state that if you are the lucky bidder for the leased sections on the St. Helens tree farm then you are allowed to camp. I think there are only 6 lease areas. Not sure if any are in the Winston or not but I knew when they put out the $150 permit there would be no camping. Although maybe in the future? There are 13,000 permits up for sale. Could you imagine if all of those permit holders were camped on the tree farm :yike:

There should be camping on state land up there. I see it every year during bow season. There is also port of Blakley land up there so beware of where you're setting up camp. Download the free trial of hunt gps maps on your phone and go for a drive. That's what I did. Learned a lot!

My buddy just bought the permit. He also got an email that it can take 2-4 weeks to get his packet. If it's going to take that long then I definately wont be purchasing it now for early archery season.  So my question is.....is that email just a worse case scenario and how long did it take you to get your packet from time of purchase?

The state doesn't allow camping there anymore.  It became a mini-campground with 20 camps--even horses.
