long Range day with the 284, 7 RUM, 300 WSM, 338 Edge, and 375 BME
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:15:32 AM »
We went out yesterday to check out a couple of new shooting spots up in the Mt Baker Snoqualmie national forest. We got a little shooting done at 749, 960, and 1389 yards. I brought the 284 Striker, Borden Rimrock BRM in 7 RUM and the 375 BME. My shooting partner brought his 300 WSM and his 338 Edge. I was testing the 7 RUM with the 200gr Wildcat bullets at 3095 fps. The 375 BME is shooting what I call the "lite" load of a 350gr Sierra MK at 2995 fps. The Striker is a 168gr Berger VLD at 2665 from the 19" barrel.

We didn't get any video of the 960 yard target, but we did get video at the 749 and 1389 targets.

I won the best group of the day with the Savage Striker in 284 Win. This is 3 shots at 960 yards with the pistol.

The pistol struggled at 1389 though. I have to admit that I was taking a beating at that point. This is the first real shooting trip since I fractured my right elbow about 8 weeks ago. Shooting the pistol tends to beat my elbow into the bench every shot. It may be time to put a muzzle brake on there.

The 7 RUM with the 200gr Wildcat bullets was truly impressive. I haven't really worked with this load and the barrel only had 8 rounds through it until we went out yesterday. I fired 3 shots to get the gun zeroed and get a velocity reading, and then we went to the 960 and 749 targets. Using a BC of .88  and 3095 fps, that data was extremely close at 749 and 960. I only loaded 15 rounds, so I ran out by the time we got to 1389 yards.

The 375 BME held it's own, but we're struggling with the drop data. Every ballistics calculator we use gives different numbers regardless of the data entered. I just need to go out and chronograph it at a few different ranges and calculate a real BC for the 350gr MK. I'm a little nervous about hitting my chrony at 500 yards with a 350gr bullet though! :chuckle:

Ean's bargain build 338 is always a consistent performer. He had it put together by a local smith who had never really built a precision gun, let alone a 338 anything! You really can't go wrong when you screw a Bartlien barrel onto a Remington action though.
http://youtu.be/8GCS5AxaWHA

Without a doubt, the highlight of the day were the last 2 shots though. Ean decided to try a sitting shot with the 300 WSM, resting on his knee, at 749 yards. We dialed the elevation correction, and there was not significant wind, just a little spin drift. He snapped the shot and sure enough hit within 2 inches to the right of the 3" point of aim! I told him that he'd never be able to repeat it, but now I had to try as well. Same position, and I managed to hit about 1" low and 2" right of the spot as well. It's one of those things that nobody would believe unless they saw it, and it's just about the only thing that we didn't record! :bash:

Phenomenal. Very, very nice shooting - and equipment.

Here's the 284. It's a McGowen 19" varmint contour barrel. The scope is a Leupold VX-3 with M-1 turrets and Premier Reticles installed one of their Mil Dot reticles.

I need to get some good pics of the Borden rifle still. I like the 270 RUM and 338 Edge barrels, but this 7 RUM barrel is becoming my favorite.

Next trip out I'd like to try and get the the 6.5 Badger out.

Oh yes. I have a friend who has a 1200 yard range near Northport Washington. He's really heavy into long distance shooting and would love to watch your skills with a handgun......
