Grouse hunting Western Washington
« on: September 15, 2014, 01:55:50 PM »
Hello, I live in Redmond and just last month finished my hunters education last month. I just purchased my small game license a few days ago. My father and I are looking for a place to grouse hunt this upcoming week. I'm not asking for any secret spots or anything, but if someone could point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. We're not looking to drive anymore than an hour.
Thanks
Logan

Find any foothill logging, FS, DNR roads and drive them early. Crack of shooting light to about 9am is the best time. First time out for my 8 & 10 yo boys this morning, we missed one and didn't get shots at two others. Had a misfire on a bunny too! (Operator error...) Blanked! But fun! Going again tomorrow!

Hi Logan, first off congrats on passing your hunters ed.  That's fantastic.

The most difficult thing you're going to find is your one hour drive limitation from Redmond.  It used to be you could walk into the Hancock land up the north fork Snoqualmie but now you have to pay to walk in there as well.  It'll cost you $15 dollars for the day now. https://hancockrecreationnw.com/node/207

Another close by option is one of the gates roads off the east side of Hwy 18 just after the 18/I-90 interchange.  I've never been up there but I would assume there is grouse up in there.

If you widen your range a bit, you can drive 90 minutes to Cle Elum and another 15 - 20 minutes up onto South Cle Elum ridge.  You'll find grouse up there.  I was just in there today.  I flushed one but missed it.  You'll also find them in the woods on the north side of Cle Elum, from Salmon la Sac to the Teanaway.

Good luck, I hope you have better luck than I do!  I may take my daughter and /or son out this weekend as well.

It's total BS these timber companies charge $15 to WALK in the place ... Crazy how something as simple as grouse hunting is getting harder and harder to do... Especially for kids .... When I was young there was endless forest land you could drive into ... The only place you had to pay was Champion for a day pass but you could in drive anywhere ... Between fuel cost and having to pay to get in to timber land, hunting is slowly becoming a sport for the rich ... Too bad ...

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you there. I'm north of you up in ferndale but I'm just gonna wait to go shoot released pheasants to get the dog on birds.

Dude if you live in Redmond...??..... just head up highway 2. Pretty much every single gravel road you encounter off highway 2 will be good hunting, assuming you go up hill a ways. I don't think that's far... is it?
Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

Thanks for the responses guys. No I do not believe highway 2 is that far and I'm defiantly gonna look into it. Again, thanks.
