Small buck, four point bull, cow and a black bear down!
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:11:22 PM »
I shot a small blacktail on the opener then on the 5th My first elk ever and happy as could be.  My brother shot a 4 point opening day and I got to head out earlier than thought.  So we go to kill the bigger bull that was with the bull my brother killed.  We wait on the landing and he chuckles, three or four times before we can head down.  We get to the bottom and set up but we must have hung back too far when calling cause he left out the back bugling his way to his bed.  The next day we head to a different area and right before dusk find a 4 point grazing we set up and bugle, he comes in on a trot and right before hes in range the wind explodes in all directions.  He gets to 70 yards and goes to spook. I come to draw settle in and clean miss him.  He trots back down and disappears. So after a few days we head to town and get supplies.  We hike up a large ridge that evening and sit and wait on a cut we have had lots of encounters in.  About 5 my hunting partner mews.  The bull growls up a raspy bugle and its on.  We get where we think we are right on top of him and bugle.  He pushes his cows and the fight is on he bugles with me for ten minutes while my partner waits patiently for a shot that never came.  He had the bull at 67 but was not confident.  As the cows all got pushed into the reprod I made my move and ran down the road to ambush them as they crossed.  I could see a cow grazing at the end of the long stretch they always cross at.  So I get to where she was and a small group spooks  in the reprod.  A few steps later and we spotted a cow at twenty yards staring at us.  I found a window and came to draw.  Hit her dead center in the heart.  It took awhile to find blood but after that a few steps to my first archery elk kill.  I slowed the video down cause she's hard to see.  Great hunt with great friends.

Thanks MLB! All my years of dedication without much success have taught me to stick at it and all the stars will eventually align.  I have a lot of cutting/wrapping to do today.  Wish I had better video but I'll try to edit it better.  Maybe zoom.

Here's a pic of my brothers four point.  Shot within thirty mins of legal light on the opener.  We are both very pleased.

The last two guys in camp struck out on the elk but one killed a nice black bear on the 11th.  40 yards both lungs.  His first archery kill.  So all in all we had a great elk camp!  I hope others were as pleased as us.  I learned a lot and can't wait till next year.

I was thinking.  This is the bear I shot and the guy I shot trying to steal my bear.  :chuckle: :chuckle: Very cool way to measure and size the animal.  Congrats.
