Decent Sized Bear?
« on: September 20, 2014, 10:26:06 AM »
Howdy,

I know these are the best pics, but I'm not the greatest at guessing bear size. The first pic showing the back of the bear's head seems to be a decent sized one, but the second pic makes it look small. Any guesses on size? Is it a harvestable bear in your opinion? Thanks for your feedback!

Well brother..ya dont need to hear any more opinions... on this board I dont know many opinions I trust more than BTKR and BA... billy lives and loves bears and says kill it.

that said, Ill say more than they did to sound like I know what Im talking about

To me it looks like the standard average bear in Wa. Most bears are in the 250 range that Ive seen..some closer to 200...some closer to 300...  everyone thinks a dcent bear is 350lbs...Id say thats an over estimate. Ive killed a 350 lb bear...and it coulda crapped out any one of WA State bears Ive killed (all in the 225-250lb range).

Bears are tricky to judge but...the question is whats your goal? record book? pretty wall rug? half or full mount? That will drive your answer.

I like taxidermy and wont kill much that I wont 1. pay to mount and 2. eat.

When i see a bear... Q 1. any cubs? no... Q2, hows its hide? full and thick? spotty and rubbed up? ...looks good?  Q3. Does it look FAT...belly sagging...wide...just BIG?  Q4. how big are its ears? do they look big and silly? small/young bear...do they look small and off the sides of his head? If ya have a fat bear with little ears and a good coat...whack him

and dont buy into the BS...bear meat is plenty tasty

-that bear is big enough for a spot in my dead room!

Thanks all, and a special thanks to LongTatlaw. If he happens to come by when it's deer season I would probably take him. My first bear wasn't the biggest, so I wanted to hold out for a bigger one. If I do happen to get another one I will definitely look into some recipes as I turned my first one all into sausage and pepperoni. Appreciate the feedback
