Humming birds and Yellow Jackets.
« on: September 28, 2014, 11:38:50 AM »
We just had a thread about Hummingbirds. So I got a feeder and those little buggers are really friendly. I think they are starting to hang around just to say howdy. They are really cute. Some of them will kind of dart around my face as if they are trying to say thank you or something. For the last two months or so if I go out and have a smoke I usually see five or more in that short time. So yesterday, I decided to take some pix. They were getting friendly enough and comfortable enough with me to hang around while I was sitting outside and moving around. Giving me plenty of time to free hand shoot some pix with the sun at my back. I didn't see any. Weird I thought. So I set up my tripod and had to shoot into the sun so I could use my remote shutter control. So here is my pick. LOL. Not to good. Any who, I also had a bunch of yellow jackets crawling all over the feeder. That was a first. I don't know what changed. I had one humming bird come in and as soon as it noticed the Yellow-jacket it was out of there. What is a good way to gain control again over my feeder? Any ideas? I figure now that the Yellow Jackets have discovered this it is going to be a problem now.

Here's a link to a page dedicated to solving exactly your yellow jacket problem.
I hope it helps.

Hey thanks Seahawk! Yeah, I think that might be what it is. My yellow jacket trap bait has been 10 week stuff. I haven't been able to find that anymore. So I have some 4 week bait in there now. Only works for two weeks I guess.

I put up "Rescue" yellow jacket traps (the yellow ones) a few feet away from the hummer feeders.
These take care of the yellow jackets.
