2000 Chevy silverado brake lights question
« on: September 22, 2014, 08:14:39 PM »
Replaced my brake light switch that went bad and noticed my brake lights are dim. The turn signals and hazard lights are much brighter. The tail lights are led and the 3rd brake light above the back window is also dim. What would cause that? I don't know if they were dim before the new brake switch or not. Also noticed that when hooked up to a trailer everything but brake lights work on the trailer.

Check the connection on the stop lamp fuse . The mini fuses don't handle load well .  If the hi mount is dim  you  most likely have a poor power feed . The brake lights run through the turn signal switch but not the third lamp.  You can try by passing g the stop lamp switch. But I'd cycle the fuse and scrape it.

K just went out and replaced the fuse with a new one. With the lights on I pushed the brake down and the tail lights didn't brake at all with the parking lights on. The 3rd light barely came on. With the lights off the tail lights and 3rd brake light barčly came on.

So when driving at night you would only see my 3rd light barely get brighter to see I was stopping.

If the tail lights cancel out your brake lamps you have a poor ground. With the lamps off your getting a ground through that circiut. . I'd have to check a diagram to see where the ground is. If you wanna call me tomorrow I will look at the circuit and give you a hand. 206 522 6100, corey

Be sure to check all your grounds, trailer wiring if tapped into factory wiring, and also make sure that your bulbs are stock spec's. The wrong bulbs and/or LED replacements can and will cause issues.

I had a heck of a time with my brake lights in my 1994 chevy. I then found out there was a recall on the brake switch and wiring. Check to see if you have any recall's before you go cutting or bypassing any wires. I did that and it made it a pain once the recall items were fixed.

You may wanna pull those led tail lamps out and check the harness some times they  will have a load converter for the flasher, aftermarket parts are the first place to look

only ground I could find for the lights was on the frame above where the spare tire would go if I had one. time to borrow a tester and see whats goin on. didn't see a converter on the tail lights. wish I new someone with the same body style truck to let me plug theyre tail lights in and see if my brake lights work
