looking for someone to shoot over my dog, West side
« on: September 29, 2014, 12:48:16 AM »
Hey all, I have a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon that has had a few months of training this year with Doug out at Cooke Canyon. He nearly has his AKC Junior Hunter title (needs one more pass) and scored 108 prize I in his NAVHDA Natural Ability test. Not that in the end any of that really means more than he's coming along well in his training. He's not steady to flush or shot (yet) which is what we really need to work on.

Problem is, my hunting season is over before it started, as I just had a rotator cuff surgery, and I'll be surprised if I'll be able to mount a shotgun even for late season waterfowl (I doubt it).

So here's the thing, I'm hoping to find someone, who'd like to go out with my boy Drake and I, to shoot some Pheasants at some release sites on the west side, and/or Grouse. I can't shoot but my legs work just fine, so I'll work Drake, as that won't hurt my shoulder, and more importantly, gets him on birds, which is what he needs.

I'd prefer someone who has at least a little experience shooting over dogs, because he's not broke to flush or shot, I don't want anyone shooting my buddy if he bounds after a bird ;), it's not a deal breaker, just a preference, as I'll be trying to hold him with a lead when the bird is flushed, so that I can train him to hold.

I'm getting an "even" day pass, and would like to do weekdays to avoid the crowds if possible (not working due to the surgery, so I basically have every day open) so I'm hoping someone on here has days open during the week, though weekends can work also. I have some friends I'll be going out with periodically to shoot over him, but they go almost exclusively on weekends, which is why I'm looking for people to go with during the week.

Also, I live in Lynnwood, just north of Seattle, and I'm hoping to keep drive times to no more than an hour one way (60-70 miles), to give anybody an idea of the areas we could go to.

So if you don't have a dog, or need an extra dog to help work a big field, I'd love to join ya, so please let me know  :)

I'm working nights right now, so I'll be hitting the release sites on the weekdays pretty often. I have a dog I'll be bringing, but he's a flusher. You're more than welcome to come along, I live in Brier, not too far from you.

Thanks for the offer John B, I'd love to join you, but since Drake is still early in his training, having him work with a flushing dog, might cause him to lose some of his good habits we've worked hard to get ;).

If something happens with your pooch, sick (god forbid)or what have you, and you still want to go, let me know, I actually live right on the border with Brier, so we live really close.

Thanks again!

Anyone else?

I hear ya, you might try just heading down there. Saw a father and son at the Ebey site today with no dog. I'm sure they would have been more than happy to hunt with you

Thats a great suggestion! I had thought of going just with him, but being unable to shoot, I thought it would have limited value, and be more discouraging than anything, I didn't think about others who might be there without a dog, Thanks!!
