Anybody using their DSLR for video?
« on: October 03, 2014, 07:58:24 AM »
I have a 7D and haven't done any video. Wife wants me to start getting some vid of the kids soccer.
If so what lens selection and how do you set up? And if you would offer some input on memory and storage etc.
Thanks

I have a 7D, but have only used the video a couple of times. (Normally I'm to busy concentrating on taking stills, so I forget all about taking videos. ;) :) ) I used my 17-40 lens for one video and then for the other I used my 24-105 lens. Both videos came out beautiful.

I wish it would let you stare through the viewfinder instead of the flatscreen for video.   I don't like it nearly as much and since I am usually taking photos instead of vid, I become all thumbs.   It does take nice video though.

The focus is not at all like a video camera and performs poorly in low light.  Outside works pretty well.  wider view but does not come close to my GoPro3.  Nikon D5100

I usually use my consumer level camcorder ($300). Yes a DSLR usually has a larger sensor and therefore beautiful image quality, most lack a continuous auto focus function so for something like soccer games plan on having to manually focus your lens as you track the kiddos in the frame. Some people get quite good at this, but I like the simplicity of my lightweight camcorder doing the focusing for me so I can concentrate on holding the camera still. I hate watching a video where the videographer is jerking the camera all over the place, either due to focusing or the weight of the setup. Image stabilization only goes so far.

Thanks for the replies. I have only used it for stills and it does amazing w/ the 70-200 2.8.
I'm going to need to shoot quite a bit of my son or hire someone that knows what they are doing for college recruitment stuff. Wouldn't look to good to a prospective college if it is herky jerky and not focusing well.
