Advice needed NE camping opening weekend.
« on: September 29, 2014, 07:18:27 PM »
I found out last night that our friends I was going to ask to stay at their place in Newport are going to be gone for opening weekend. I don't mind camping out in the National Forest and was wondering what about your knowledge of the campgrounds in the Colville, Republic, or Kettle Falls areas. Are these camprounds usually full if you don't make it before Friday? I assume like the NF around here that there are spots to pull in and set up where available.

The reason why I was going to head to the east side is that my son has not shot a deer yet. He has taken two bulls, but no deer. He is a senior this year and is going to join the Marine Corp after graduation, so after this year I don't think I will get to do much hunting with him for four or five years. I would love to get him a buck no matter what size and that was the reason we were going to hunt the NE corner of the state. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Many of the FS campgrounds are closed up right now, any FS open area should be ok for camping though.  You won't have trouble finding camping spots.

Deer numbers are increasing.  You should be able to find something to shoot at.

There's a campground about every other mile along lake Roosevelt. (Columbia river)

You'll probably have Canadian neighbors, but they're usually friendly.

Kettle Falls marina has a nice campground that's close to town and has an RV dump station.

Thanks for the responses and PM's. I appreciate it. I want to spend as much quality time with my son as I can and really do appreciate the advice. He has wanted to serve his country since he was little boy and now as a young man he has made his choice. As hard as it is we have to let him grow into the man that he has become and let him make his own choices. This will be time well spent and if we get a deer or two it will be that much better. Thanks again.

If you want him to get a buck no matter what size, I would advise avoiding units 121 ans 117 as they have a 4x minimum on whitetail.

Beal Park on the Kettle River. 10 miles west of Curlew. It has about 5 camp spots with concrete tables and a fire spit.. Very nice, safe place to camp. FREE too........
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

And there are as many 4+pt bucks running around as spikes 4 years ago now

Doesn't change the fact that if he's looking for any buck " no matter the size,"  that those 2 units are not the place to be.

We have hunted 49 degrees north before. Our friend used to work for Stimpson and showed us properties that they have owned (which is what we hunted). Figuring that I would be staying in Newport I was going to try GMU 113. I spent a little bit of time in the unit just north of Newport, but have not gone further North. I have to go to Newport anyways as I am dropping off my best friend, so he can pick up his motor home. Looking at 113 the map looks like their are quite a few clearings back there. I was thinking going off NF 157 or maybe the 1934 system. Not sure what type of pressure this area gets though.
