Had a pretty exciting morning.
Was working the edge of a bowl canyon, calling on the bugle. I actually got a response from the ridgeline behind me! I turned back towards the game trail I was on, and surprise! There was a huge black bear staring me down at only twenty five yards! I don't have a tag this year (which is why I saw him. If I'd had a tag, I'd never have seen a bear), and he melted away into the brush.
I followed the bugling to the ridge (I heard it 3 other times) before he finally went silent at 0830. I worked that ridge for a long while, but to no result. I jumped two does later in the morning.
It was so hot, I think most of the elk were down in their cool, dark haunts. This bull found himself a nice quiet ridge with the beginnings of a spring, so I'm sure he was all happy all by himself.
Sunday was much more uneventful, as we saw zero animals while hunting.
