Mt Whittier Antlerless Modern Rifle

Might the other winner of the Mt Whittier Antlerless Modern Rifle permit be on hunt-wa? October 11-17. If so we've got our work cut out for us.

I drew one of the two available permits and am wondering if you might want to tag team this hunt. Team work. I am somewhat familiar with this area, planning a hiking trip in there this summer.

To any others that have drawn tags in here, did you come in with a boat up the lake, hike in from Norway pass, or bike up the logging roads through the Margaret? Have the elk been mostly up high or lower down?

Several herds can be seen on Google earth.  I was trying for the bull tag with 2 points.  Leaving it to the younger guys from here on out.  I'd offer my canoe, but right in the middle of my hunts.

I drew the bull tag in that area. Planning to make quite a few scouting trips to find a good one. Area looks good already finding out quite abut about the area. It's going to be a long pack out when we do shoot one!!

Some of the most beautiful country in the state! Though it is hike in and out for sure. Have you visited with anyone who drew a tag in that area before?

Never drawn the tag but been through it a couple times. It's gonna be work any way you look at it. I came in from Norway pass and the valley west/south of the trail was loaded with elk, mid slope in Aug. They may not be there later in the year, but it's a start.
If I was cow hunting, I wouldnt go far from the lake.

Your looking at a few miles in from the lake no matter what route you take to get where the elk are. Cool area but lots of work. Dad had muzzy cow tag last year. He was the only one to get a cow during that season. The other bull muzzy permit didn't get his elk either. And the two modern cow tag holders didn't tag out either. The modern bull tag holder got his elk.
It took us 21 hours of hauling our gear and animal back to the truck. Most tired I've ever been. But was an experience I'll never forget. Modern will be easier to get a shot when you do locate one.
Last season government shut us out of using the boat launch and didn't know that until we got to a closed gate with the boat. No gas powered motors allowed to go up the lake so long boat ride. Or long hike along lake. Several other routes into the unit so take a look at all possible routes to see what works for you.

When going in from Norway pass, or Cold water, be aware, a lot of the StHelens area is off limits to weapons of any kind, and or off trail travel.

Congratulations on drawing that tag you will have the time of your life! I had a Margaret bull tag last year and it was a blast! Just a suggestion if you haven't already done it you will have to reserve a camp site with the forest service and get a permit from them. Can't wait to see pictures.

Cow down. Got it opening day, October 11th. I was up high, rain blowing uphill and hard to hold my hat on!

Shot at 280 yards, using the Leupold CDS dial. One shot through the heart, dropped in its tracks. Was neat to watch through the scope.
