Hunting Clear Cut
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:05:50 AM »
Hey y'all. I bought a motorized vehicle permit for the White River Hancock land. Don't get me wrong I've had a blast exploring the land and being out there hoping to see something walk out. I haven't seen anything yet and was just wondering if anyone had some tips on hunting clear cuts. I know you are suppose to watch the tree line but all tips are welcome. Also if anyone has the same permit I wouldn't mind a hunting partner for elk season or late deer.

Biggest tip you can get is to take your time glassing. People go WAY to fast when they glass. Break the area into quadrants, then go over each area as slow as you can, looking at everything in that quadrant before moving to the next. If you think you are glassing to slow...you are probably still going to fast!

Don't be afraid to get out and walk into it either.

Yeah I've walked through a little bit. It's tough to be quiet. Do the deer bed down in there?

Deer will stay in a clear cut all day.  I have won more than a few bets by guaranteeing there are deer in a clear cut that looks empty.  Walk right through the middle of almost any clear cut and you will jump deer a majority of the time.

Oh wow. I will try that then. Issuable sit up a top of the clear cut on the logging landing and glass the slopes. Just not slow enough I guess. I usually only look for movement which I won't see unless they are up walking around.

Good bet the deer are out feeding right now. Just saw 4 deer in Woodinville chowing down. Get out there! Time is running out.....

Deer have an amazing ability to hide in open clearcuts.  They bed on the down side of stumps and terrain that  make them almost invisible.  That unit doesn't have very good deer numbers but there are a few to be had.
This scenario played out Wednesday, the of us glassed a large cut to no avail.  I took about three noisy steps into the cut and glassed.  I caught the ears of a fawn and the antler tips of a 2 point.  Got my daughter into shooting position and waited, ten minutes later she dumped him.  Good luck
