I may have an idea over here on the west side.  I have never hunted them but I am pretty sure that I can get access to some good private land.  Let me see if I can get ahold of my elk hunting buddies.  His grandfather owns the land.  We would need some decoys and our layouts.

Is it true that you can pretty much use a clorox bleach bottle for a decoy on snow geese?

Yes I think it is true! Also heard of using white kitchen garbage bags and a wood stake. I have never shot a snow goose!
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

My buddy is out of town for work.  He will be back this Friday.  I will give him a call and see what we can do.  I know my dad said he has seen quite a few of them out in the field on his way to work.  Looks like I might have to take a drive and check out the fields out there.  Its by a river, and they have some corn and alfalfa fields by it.  Heck there might even be some duck shooting there.  I will keep you posted.  He did offer when we were up elk hunting this year but ya know how that goes sometimes.

I just had another thought.  Some of us could put in for the fir island hunt next year and wing it.

The state also has some first come first served snow fields on Fir Island.   8)

Hey guys, from my lessons of hunting snows its hit or miss with the use of decoys.  They tend to be one of the most warry birds as the season progresses.  We used to hunt Fir Is when it was good.. that is before all these stupid rules came around.
We would just watch them in the evening and see where they were just before they left for the water..  We would hide ourselves the best we could and just wait til they showed up.  They tend to return in the morning to where they were the night before as long as everything looks normal.
A few years ago, a couple of guys we knew learned what we were doing and beat us to a certain field. They had all kinds of rags out.  We begged them to take them down but they wouldnt listen.  So we watched about 5k geese fly over and take one look....... they never even thought about landing gear.
So it has been my tactics not to use them most of the time later in the season.
But now there are many places that require you to use them on Fir Is.

Just my  :twocents:

Spur-
If you are the type of die-hard hunter I think you are...you should probably go get a guide to really experience a snow hunt. Go up to the Skagit, shoot over 500 decoys at birds that have a chance of landing. Otherwise, by now those birds are so wary that they dont even miss a wing beat. The other positive about going to Skagit is the amount of birds you will see...it truly is a treat. I know its a drive from ML but if you want a good shot at shooting a lanyard full...thats what I would suggest. Anything else is somewhat wasting time.

I hunt fir island every weekend and right now with the snow on the ground they are flying power line high everywhere. and the coment on the guided hunt thats a crock of *censored* they dont shoot *censored* over the deaks they just pass shoot like the rest of us locals. but on their leased ground. the farmers will let you hunt if you just ask them. DO NOT WORK ANY MORE. people need to understand this my buddys and i have 1200 decoys and we dont even bring them out anymore since the state got involved. we kill limits every weekend just sitting in dich row.
Its all about the bone baby!

Head hunter, thanks for confirming what I said.

Decoys just dont work for snows once they have seen them a couple of times.  The best time to hunt them is when the wind is blowing like hell........ something like the forecast for saturday !!!!!!   Just find a field that isnt controlled by the FG and get in a ditch and wait em out !!

There was about 70 of them flying low, North over the Southbound lanes of I-5 at 9:30 this morning on my way to work. DAMN! I wish I was headed out to the flats. Yeaterday it was Swans, today Snowgeese.

I have killed a limit of snow geese in less than 30 minutes 4 days in a row...Do like others have stated, find them the night before, find a ditch/brush to hide in, wait for the birds to fly to where you have seen them.  With the snow on the gound and the cold temps, they want food and will fly to known good locations without circling.

As a side note, get permission prior to hunting private property, dont let wounded birds get away, and be a good steward of the sport.  Fir island and the snow goose hunting is going to be a thing of the past in years to come from all of our dirt bag friends...

Shooting snow geese on fir island right now is a joke.  It is truly a blood bath.  I shot limits on Friday and Saturday and it took about 5 minutes each day.  I know they are rats with wings but its just not fair how easy it is.

Its not always like that... You gotta have the right conditions. Wind and lots of it, the snow on the ground sure helps tons too.
