She points!
« on: December 10, 2014, 05:58:34 AM »
I got my 5 month old brit out in the field for the first time to smell some quail.  At first she didn't know what to think, but she caught on pretty quick.  Ive been pleasantly suprised at how smart this pup seems to be.  If she turns out to be the perfect cross between her mom and dad that we are hoping for, I'll be one happy camper.  Her Dad just won the ABC All age Nationals and her mom finished #3 in the country in All Age points.  She has the breeding to be a good one, but you never know.

Way to get her out there.   Thanks for the pics.  In a couple years we'll see her standing proudly over the days haul

Always fun to get the pups out!  Is she a roan?  Going to run her in any juvenile stakes this spring?  Or wait till fall?

Yep, she's a roanie.  We ended up with 4 roans and two mostly white dogs out of the litter.  She is by far the lightest of the roans.  The rest are as dark, or darker then their mom.  We might run her as a derby next fall, but it all depends if she looks like she will be a trial dog.  If she doesnt have the run, bidability, and the nose, I won't waste the money.

Is that public land down there?  Or is there huntable public land like that?  I"ve always been curious to do a plantation hunt in the south.  Cool pictures.

That's a plantation.  There is public land like that, but most of its a draw hunt.  The DiLane Plantation is 8000 acres of state land that looks a lot like that and is managed extensively for wild quail.  They use it for hunting and as wild bird trial grounds.  It's nice, but hard to get drawn.  I'll be there in January running at the Southern Open Brittany Championship.

The plantation I hunt is pretty cool.  It's mostly released birds, but the guy who runs it lets me hunt grounds with a bunch of wild birds as well.  He just asks that I don't destroy the coveys, and that I don't tell anyone about them.  Typically I won't even shoot into them, but I've got a cool video of my dad getting a double this weekend on wild birds.

Yes on the ecollar.

It drives me nuts when people don't pick up their empties.  It's so easy, yet people don't even think about it.
