Learning to call

Hey all- Being new to Elk hunting I just wanted to ask: what is the best way to learn how to call Elk?

There are allot of good tapes and video's out there. Beyond that....practice,practice,practice.

I've found the best place to practice is in your car on the way to work, no one can hear you or see the funny look on your face when the diaphram tickles the roof of your mouth...

i used to go to the loowit area and call like crazy.we cant hunt those elk, so i dont care if they get educated.

 Hey Guys, thanks for the kudos! I agree the DVDs are a very good instrument in steering hunters in the right direction on the use of elk sounds & how to use or make them, depending on the DVD you get!

  I will also mention that I have a FieldGuide or Book coming out hopefully by the end of Jan. It will be in  paperback form & small enough to carry in your shirt pocket so it can be taken right into the field with you. This is the Elk Hunters Playbook. It will cover just about any elk encounter ones may come across in Aug. Sept. Oct. It also will have a Chapter on lone hunter tactics!
  It is also coming out in CD form with MP3 capabilities for IPod use, this way on the "Elk Sounds" Chapter, not only will the book itself identify what each of these 28 sounds in the book mean, but on the CD the sounds will be given so the listener knows exactly what I'm talking about when referring to selective sounds per Chapter & encounter! I'll post the Table Of Contents here shortly!

Another vote for Elknut's products..both the DVDs and calls he sells.

I also like Jim Horn's CDs on early season elk hunting (he's one of the Primos guys, but these CDs have his own name on them). He not only talks about calling, but includes discussion on the biological changes affecting elk during the rut.

yup best place to learn is loowit and toutle area, head up the 3000 line in late sept, you might piss some bow hunters off but thats where i learned alot of basic stuff

Elknut really knows his stuff and his DVDs are invaluable for teaching you the different sounds.  I know he has been working on the field guide for awhile and I have no doubt that it will be just as good.
