Boneless Meat Calculator
« on: January 08, 2015, 06:10:45 PM »
Dug this up somewhere a while back. Looks like it was originally from a Wyoming Game and Fish Department study on harvest rates with bonus columns on dressed out, vs. boned out weight. Forumula works as follows: determine approximate weight of field dressed bull, multiple that total weight by .50 which gives you the boneless meat weight (as seen in chart). So, if you shoot a bull that field dresses out to 500 lbs (6ish year old bull), multiple 500 X .50 which should yield 250 lbs of boned out meat. Seems pretty close to me  ;)

Cool info, it'd be cool to get a chart for each state an see how they differ

I know the western wa bulls are a tad bigger ! And some western idaho bulls are somewhere in between

On the average of coarse

i wonder what the chart would say for my buddies cow he shot that was 19 years old. No chit... Collared elk that was 19 years old and still nursing.

Where is the extra chart for the amount of meat lost from multiple bad shots to the body and not the vitals?  :P

Saw an elk that only yielded about 60# after the hunter hit it 9 times, 8 of them in all the good solid meaty parts ruining a lot of good meat. Guy was shaking so bad after shooting it that we would not let him handle his knife, probably would have lost the rest of the meat and four of his fingers.

I'd love to show tis to my friend who text me last night about his moose meat he just got back.  800 lbs of hanging weight and he only got about 60lbs back from the guy who cut it up. I called him up. He was so mad he was hyperventilating.  Asked him who the butcher was...he said his friend.  :yike:  The deal was they would split the meat.  I guess the butcher isn't very good at math.  :chuckle:

It wasn't wasted; he just didn't get all of it.  Rumor has it alot of other people were getting some.  I know both of them, I'm sure I'll hear the other side of the story at some point.

FWIW, I got 470lbs from a 6.5 year old bull.  Don't recall quarters weight.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

This is the perfect reason to cut it up yourself.
