Sent in my comments. I can't believe they are considering combining early muzzleloader deer and elk into the same week. That would totally ruin it for our family.

We use a different load for deer and elk for the kids(lighter deer load/bullet). I often use a different muzzleloader for deer and elk. We dry camp and hunt all walk in areas, requiring a whole day just to get an elk out and cleaned, hung, etc...

My daughter enjoyed her first year elk hunting last year and now my boys are both ready. But to go out and not be able to focus on one species does not make it easy to teach them how to hunt. Combining will make for a very stressful week and probably make these new hunters hate hunting.

I agree it can be less desirable to have deer and elk muzzleloader at the same time. But it also can be advantageous. It all just depends on each person's perspective. Nothing they do is going to make everyone happy 100% of the time.

The good news is- if you don't like it just wait until 2017 when deer will open September 30 and elk will open October 7.

Bobcat so true not everyone will be satisfied as it is arranged for the masses.

Topofthefoodchain,
Those first days hunting either elk or deer are when one gets the best results. Making the most of those first days is the key to success as we now have a chance at elk or deer. Past practice muzzy hunters hunting deer were in the woods spooking the elk. Can't say how many times one has to pass on elk because the week was split during early deer. Lost a week but gained a chance to bag both.
I can live with that and most kids can too, as long as we the parent don't stress the little stuff.  Just have fun and teach them well, because we only get one chance.
Whatever........
