bobcat help
« on: January 21, 2015, 04:10:28 PM »
need a little bit of help. I'm confused about the whole bottled lure and bait thing. I've got bobcats in the area but no catches yet. I'm considering using a lure. Do you guys use lure and bait or just the lure. Do you use lure and bottled or bait you buy or natural bait. and do you use them together. a little lure or alot. Does time of year or weather matter. I've had them at the door but they wouldn't commit. I just need that extra edge that might make them take those few extra steps. Thanks

I use primarily beaver meat for bait and no lure. Sometimes I will try some lure if I get something different. Guys down in CA have a harder time using bait so depend more on lured sets. I have made my own lure and tried commercially produced lure.
I don't see how using lure in conjunction with bait could hurt but what kind is something you will have to figure out as I don't have the answer.
Time of year and weather definitely make a difference. I have found later is better. Things don't get good until February. Bad weather is better too. You can catch cats on nice days and any time of the year but I have had better trapping on average late and stormy.
Cats looking but not committing is what drives cat trappers crazy. You're not alone.

I use beaver carcasses too.  As for lure I have, and if I do, I use some cat urine at this time of the year.  Don't put it in the traps  :bdid: but on the outside on one side.  I have used Lure, and if I do it will be in February when the breading season is on.  Use "gland lure" than.  Put it on a stick and hang it inside the trap up on top of the trap.  This way you got him looking and smelling upward not paying attention to where it steps.  Also put a small stick in front of the trap pan for him to "step" over onto the pan.

My mentor Carl Jensen use to use nothing but eye appeal such as feathers or a duck wing hanging from fishing line.

I hope this kind of helps you.

Why not spray some urine on the inside of the trap?

Why not spray some urine on the inside of the trap?

Because if you do and have bait in there other cats will not go in.  Would you go and grab a bite to eat if someone sprayed urine on your food?   :bash:   :bdid:

Got it, thanks.  I've caught cats in cages sprayed with urine on the inside but maybe I'd catch more if I DIDN'T do that.  I saw it on a Mercer Lawing video but those California guys aren't really using food bait either.  No, I wouldn't eat meat with cat urine smell but I'm not a cat (I wouldn't go in a box that smelled like cat's ass either  :o).
