Recommended Learning Resources
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:07:37 AM »
Hi there,

I'm a traditional bowhunter. Got a few deer seasons under my belt (no success) but no experience with elk. Anybody have good resources to share to learn about bowhunting elk? I don't care much about all the products and widgets, I need to learn some basic stuff about habitat use and behavioral patterns. Anything helps, but would love to find some Washington -specific and trad-specific resources. Books, articles, podcasts, websites...... any and all.

Thanks in advance.

I recently picked up a book titled Bowhunting Modern Elk by Patrick Meitin (Petersens Bowhunting Adventures' Editor). I have not finished it yet, but so far is a good read. There is a chapter that covers a state-to-state breakdown as well.

There are a lot of resources regarding elk calling, I personally enjoyed Joel Turner's (2x RMEF elk calling World Champion) Instinctive Elk Calling DVD. Along with his calling instruction he also provides some scenario type examples.

I know there are others on here that also have some good info, ElkNut.com is a good start point. He also has recently released some story based and in-depth calling instruction on his Soundcloud account.

One other thing I do is subscribe to John Dudle'y's Nock On podcast as well as Petersen Bowhunting podcast. I typically listen to these on my long drive to and from work. Although these are typically compound archery based there are some podcasts with trad shooters and some with celebrities where the information would apply to both styles.

This website!  Just have to wade through quite a bit of threads.
Another good source is the WDFW site.  You can get a lot of the summaries from things the biologists have worked on.  Some go into great detail like what percentage of each type of plant an elk will feed on in differing months/conditions.

:yeah: There are literally volumes of information contained in deer and elk threads on this site.
