Prairie dog hunts, "FRUGAL"
« on: March 21, 2015, 09:18:43 AM »
Looking for a June hunt in Montana. Unguided but willing to pay "some". Have all the equiptment needed just need a place. Anyone with ideas, costs. Recommendations from past hunts. Want 3 to 5 days hunting maybe a couple more depending on cost. Or anyone going and want xtras along to cut costs. Could be motel or ranch house with B&B type hunt.
Someone said there were dogs in Idaho, that would be OK too. A little shorter drive.
Real PD's not ground squirrels.

I've heard Zortman Mt has a lot of them. Don't know if that is what you're looking for though.

Ton of them where we hunt down in Moab Utah.  Great way to get the rifles sighted in before the actual hunt.  We used to chase them around Vernal Utah when I was young-still a ton of them around there also. On a good morning you'd see 40-50 from one spot, and they're  a tough target at about 200 yards.  Nice thing about the Vernal area was that there were also a lot of rock chucks-wasted a lot of ammo between the two species.

I went and shot them at Zortman with my Grandpa and Uncle 20 years ago or so.We shot them on the reservation and if I remember right it was 75 bucks for the tresspass fee/hunting license and that fee included an antelope in the fall.I'm sure things have changed as far as the fees go.We stayed in a mobile home that was setup for hunters and while it wasn't ultra super nice,it was clean and comfortable. The lodging cost 25 dollars per night and it was 3 bedroom/2bath fully utensiled kitchen. It was a fun and on the CHEAP trip,There wasn't a shortage of targets either. We got flagged over by a rancher and he took us to his ranch and let us shoot it for free, lots of nice people over in that country.
I've heard Zortman Mt has a lot of them. Don't know if that is what you're looking for though.

There are pd's all over the state. When I lived there we hunted mile city area all the way to ekolaka where I lived. Then access was free and easy to get. Any one with cattle had great spots!  This is where my love for long range shooting was fueled, this was 17 years ago.  I need to get back over there!  I'd love to tag along but I wouldn't know if I can get time off work till middle of May

Think the Lakeview Or are ground squirrels and not PD's. Was there Montana hunting them 2 years ago and did OK just not good or great hunting. Just yesterday got back from Sagerat hunting and shot 2300 rounds in 6 days, looking for like shooting only PD's. So I can put center fire down range. See ranch's that want $300-$400 a day just can't afford that kinda freight.

Thinking about doing the Bliss Idaho rock chuck derby this year. Prices look reasonable. Looks like a good time and is a fund raiser.
