My neice is so excited about the youth tag
« on: May 16, 2015, 08:10:37 PM »
My niece is so excited about the youth tag. She completed hunters safety year before last and this year I told her about the Toutle hunt for youth. Well she is all for it and wants to go...

However....

IF she is drawn....IF.... does anyone know about access to get in there for youth since it's a new hunt?

Put her in for one of the Mallis youth permits.

You could hunt the state land in the Toutle or pay $160 to hunt Weyerhaeuser.

my son and a friend had a youth toutle doe tag last year and it was very slim pickings on the state land for deer.  We only saw 2 doe's all season and we tried to get away from the roads.  I would put in for one of the other youth hunts.  The north end of the toutle is dead  :twocents:

Are we talking deer or elk? I'm assuming elk since it's in the elk thread... Lots of state land that's always accessible (never seen it shut out) and there's elk there. If she is drawn I will help any way I can, I know some good spots that hold elk.

Youth elk hunts have been hard to draw in the past (like 100:1 or better) for most of the few they offered on the westside. Glad to see they expanded the number of youth hunts and permits this year. With 40 tags in the Toutle, she should have a reasonable chance of getting drawn. Good luck!

know this unit well. if you buy the permit from weyco you will have alot more area to hunt. there is state land but it is only a small part of this unit. good luck to her with getting drawn for the permit.

Thank You all for your input... She is buying her tag and permits Wednesday after school with her savings from "jobs around the house" I was going to buy it for her and she said no your not... lol So she wants to do it all on her own!! I'm just hoping if she is selected that she can get her elk on opening day of her hunt and get back to school... She hates missing school... Miss A+ 4.0 gpa since Kindergarten. lol

Oh and yes we are talking about ELK

Well congrats to your niece and good luck to her in her first year. I also put my kids in for that hunt this year. I just hope that there are 40 cows still around in that unit for the lucky youth tag holders to have a chance at, with all the increased tags, extra iradication by wdfw, and die off from the hoof rot.

I wonder if Weyco is going to open the gates up for the kids?? Or if you still need a key for the kids???

I doubt it. They are allowing access for kids in the Vail tree farm, for the youth deer permits, but they're only allowing free access for one weekend- the weekend before the general season opens.

If they were going to allow kids in for free I think they'd note that on their website where you go to buy the permits. But they did not.

If she draws keep me in mind. I know the unit well and like to help out when I can.
