Colockum Elk Story

I am pretty excited I just got my grandpas set of elk antlers from when he took a bull in the Colockum on Oct 4, 1984. This is a big deal because he that is the day that he passed away while doing what he loved. The story that was told to me what he shot the bull with a muzzleloader, ran after the bull and shot at least one more time. Once he got the bull down, he then spoke to another passing hunter and asked him to relay the message if he saw his son (My Uncle) down below. Before he started working on the bull, he layed down to sharpen his knife. We think he must have had a massive heart attack. Fast forward 14 years after that we were deer hunting up in the general area and ran into the man who helped take my grandpa out of the woods. I wanted to thank him again, fellow hunters are great people. I have been saving my elk points and hoping to draw the Colockum tag! I think it would be awesome to take a bull from there. Recently I just served my civic duty and was SELECTED as a juror for a trail that lasted a week. I can't believe I was actually selected for something! The antlers are broken down the skull plate, I hope to fix them. I am going to be looking for a cape this fall, maybe do a shoulder mount.

Thanks for sharing that Mossyoak.  How big of bull is it....the only reason I ask is if I kill one of similar size in Oregon this year you can have the cape.   Shoot me a PM if you want.

I hope I die the same way!  It would suck for my children to have to get me off the mountain but to go out doing what I love and especially after just dropping a bull like that.  I will tell my kids if that ever happens just dig a hole right there and stick me in it!

Thanks everyone for offers! I will keep you in mind about the cape. The bull is a small rag horn bull. The skull plate is broke, so he may look wider than he is. Good luck to everyone next week, I hope they draw next week! Hopefully someone draws a good Bull tag.

    You could do a reproduction euro too.  You could def round up a cape to fit on that set.

Your post tells me just as much about you as it does your grandpa and his final moments.........and that's inspiring and a leaves me with hope as a more 'senior' hunter..... .

i can relate to this story, my dads uncle, the one that got him into huntin died the same way, he and his two boys were watching this valley eating lunch, the two boys said "dad, you ready to go yet" he was laying up against a rock stone cold dead, he had a massive heart attack, his heart actually blew right out the side, whats strange is the man never smoked or drank or put anything bad in his body, he was 42 years old, he spent every waking moment huntin or fishn and definatly passed away doing what he loved most in life... like your grandpa, we should all be so fortunate to go out on our own terms as they did  my grandpa also passed away doing what he loved, he always worked in the wood shop, he would go out at 4 am and start the fire and warm the wood shop up, he would come in read the paper and eat breakfast, he would then go out and work in the woodshop until noon, come in, have lunch and take his afternoon nap, well he died in his sleep during his nap that day, he was a great man, philosopher and a hell of a craftsman, made bob villa look like a green horn  but he died doing what he loved....

Sorry to hear about your uncle and grandpa....I would like to go out doing what I love as well....my grandpa was healthy but did smoke but he was only 59 when he passed away but 42 is really young...
