Lab with a limp
« on: June 29, 2015, 05:05:27 PM »
My 2.5 year old lab has been having issues for about a month now. Sometimes when she first gets up she limps on her front right foot. I have touched and bent her entire front leg and can't locate a single place that she is tender. I took her to the vet a few weeks ago and he couldn't find anything after a series of manipulations. We tried anti inflammatory tablets and they helped a bit but she still limps here and there. Thoughts?

My lab had a limp and I took him in to a vet specializing in that stuff. They were willing to do orthoscopic surgery but I went with option #2 which was the cheap option....wait and see. He had already been limping several weeks when I took him in but eventually whatever it was got better on its own. If I remember right it took a couple more months for him to walk normally again. Never did figure out what it was.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Being that we can manipulate it to find any pain and once she has moved a bit it goes away, I am assuming/hoping it's just soft tissue and will go away. It's just REALLY hard keeping a spastic 2 year old to take it easy. She only knows to speeds and that full bore and sleep

My 68 lb female lab has a slight limp on her right front also. Took her to an orthopedic specialist and he eventually gave her a hydrocortisone shot in the joint.  It was better after the first injection and then had a second one.  That seemed to heal it but it still injures easily.   He claims MRI's for dogs are a waste of money FWIW.  Bummer is they completely knock her out for the shot and she is there all day.

She stills hunts hard which doesn't seem to be where she gets hurt, it's fetching at home and exercising her that usually gives her the flare ups.

just had the same thing happen to my one year old lab.. It was a soft tissue tear in her shoulder is what the vet said was more then likely... Vet gave her a a couple of weeks worth of  anti inflammatory tablets and i was told to keep her in the travel kennel for at least 8 weeks.. no running or jumping at all, had to take her out on a leash to potty... It was hard on the dog for sure,, After 8 weeks eased her back to running.. Worked she is 100%....

I was thinking last night of doing the same thing and just making her stay in her kennel for a bit to see if that will help. She is a very active dog and likes to jump when excited so its not doing her any favors.

My 7 yo female has the same issue after a run or romp.  Swimming doesn't seam to make it flair up.  She will limit pretty bad for about a day or 2 and then back to normal.

I would ignore the cancer statement. There would be way more severe symptoms of that were the case. Sounds like just a sore pup if its not getting progressively worse? Rest and maybe some OTC doggy anti inflammatory meds might help her.

Hopefully she heals up quick!

It hasn't gotten any worse and actually some days it will be a limp for maybe 3 steps then it pretty much goes away. I am starting the crate confinement for a few days tonight to see if that will help.
