Exodus broadheads??
« on: June 03, 2015, 10:46:54 PM »
Let me first introduce myself to hunt Washington as this is my first post.......I have trolled for quite a while and I enjoyed  reading and learning about hunting in this great state of ours. I'm a avid bow hunter that is never content f
with my gear for some reason. That being said I have been eyeing the QAD exodus broadheads.they look pretty intriguing, I currently shoot wasp. I'm wondering how this fly out to a hundred yards. Has any one shot this long distance?  One think I like about them is how tough they seen. Anyways thanks for reading and I'm looking for anyone's thoughts or opinions.

Your WASP heads aren't tough enough?

I know your probably right. I shoot the BOSS 3 blade and they have done the job til last year. I shot an elk at 30 yards or so ,perfectly broadside, good shot but on entry it glanced of a rib bone and it exited out near the rear quarter . It probably was just a fluke deal.......but it gave me doubt in the broadheads.....so that leads me to looking at options.

Look at the VanDyke broadhead from Savora.

I've heard I bit on here about savora broadheads......they look similar to the wasp. I'm not comparing them, just saying that both look to be of the same general design. One thing I like about the exodus is the short profile. Not sure why.....it just seems that shorter would be stouter.one thing I don't know about is the sharpness of them, or how well they hold an edge.

Glancing shots have become an issue with many heads today.  Has to do with  point angle and blade angle in relation to the point.  WASP is generally better than most when it comes to reducing the chance of glancing shots.  It is one of the reasons I never looked much at the Exodus when we set out to build a new product...besides the fact they are barbed.

When Muzzy first came out we all ridiculed them for that stupid big bulky nasty point!  "Who would ever shoot such a thing?", we asked.  But as the rest of the broadhead industry started designing shorter and shorter heads we came to realize Muzzy was onto something and we began to follow John's lead.  But every few years someone with our old thoughts decides to go back and make the point short even on a short broadhead.  As with mechanicals they work great...until they don't ;)

American Broadhead Co. is one that comes to mind when I think of great designs ruined by increased glancing risk.  It had great blades, an original Savora prototype locking system, and a simple slim ferrule design.  And in testing at right angles it was a spectacular performer.  Dang near everything you could want in a broadhead.  But then you would get that quartering away shot at ground level, miss getting in behind the last rib and it would sound like you opened up  a large zipper as the blades run up the ribs.  Never reaching the vitals within the chest cavity.   A near perfect broadhead with a fatal flaw that looks to be it's doom.

If it were me I'd stick with the WASP or keep searching.  Our Vandyke 100, UltraCon 100 & 125 and our TiCon 125 are our best heads when it comes to reducing the chance of glancing shots.  Other good heads on the market that perform well on quartering shots would be the original Thunderhead 100 and the original Slick Trick 1".  Though I'm not sure either has any better design than the WASP Boss.  And definitely no match for the WASP Bullet.

I have been shooting the exodus for a couple seasons and really like them. They shoot good and I like the design. Not sure with the reg changes if you can shoot both styles now but I have had good luck with them closed version.

I am dealing Savora and really like the triple sec LPS and the Vandyke. When I get Rad to do me up some traditional prototypes I will stick a few in some critters :IBCOOL:

Is a longer broadhead better? Do the plane more? Shorter seems like it would be less wind drag. I'm just curious. Any archery shops in southwest wa carry Savora heads? I would like to check em out.

Longer broadheads is a relative phrase.  So it depends on your definition of longer ;)

In general a longer ferrule will reduce the chance of glancing shots.  Longer blades will generally penetrate deeper than shorter blades of the same diameter and vent hole shape and size.  Shorter broadheads will generally cut a larger hole in hide than longer blades of the same diameter.  Steeper blade angles will cut better when dull, but dull faster than lesser blade angled heads of the same material and hardness.  Thinner blades will be sharper and penetrate better than thicker blades, thicker blades of the same material and hardness will resist breakage more when glancing off bone.  Flight drag is determined by trailing edges, vent size, vent shape, cutting diameter, blade thickness, and overall length if width is equal.  All should fly well with proper fletching and FOC, but smaller can be easier to get to fly with poor arrow construction when talking similar diameter and vent configuration.

So the answer can not be absolute without knowing the relative configurations.

We tested a new Savora BH a few weeks ago, Chris shot it through a 3/4" particle board the arrow went all the way through.  I am not sure what Savora it was a little longer and the blades angel was not very steep; the tip was perfect, the blades did not bend and they where still wicked sharp. We tested this at the archery shop and everyone was impressed

The bow was a PSE Freak 70 pounds, 28.5" draw. The arrow 29" long and weighted 425 grains

Why are you wanting to shoot 100 yards?

I shoot out to 100 yards with heads.  If your heads fly great at 100 then 20 is not a problem.  Longer distances allow you to notice mistakes better then short shots.

I practice out to 100 yards, in fact I shoot out to 140 consistently with field tips. It makes a 45 or 55 yard shot feel like a slam dunk.
