I drew Peaches quality archery bull tag
« on: June 12, 2015, 05:56:53 PM »
Its going to be a fun season for this guy I drew the quality bull tag in the Peaches unit for archery and my brother drew the   Teanaway bull tag for muzzeloader, plus I drew the Hunter Education instructor incentive deer tag.
Plus 2 other buddies of mine also drew the Peaches quality tag for archery,  we are planing on setting up our camp at least a month in advance, from there we are packing in to a few different drainage's,  more to follow

Join the crowd!  Lets kill some monsters
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

I plan on burning up some serious boot leather scouting this year, and gonna try real hard not to shoot the first bull I see.

I have 2 buddies that also drew the same tag, we will be spending as much time as possible this summer scouting the unit, this is the third Quality bull tag that I have drawn since the special permits drawing system was implemented, 15 years ago I drew the Teanaway Bull tag and held out for a bull that was a monster, had a few opportunity's to shoot small bulls but ended up eating the tag, a few years later I drew the tag again and held out for a big bull with the same results, I figure this time I will stick to my same plan, go big or go home empty handed.

I just got back from  a week of back packing in the Enchantments, put in about 50 miles and had many close encounters with mt goats, my buddies have been scouting the Little Naches with some good reports, my scouting will start around Sept 1st, I know were the elk are.

You're setting up camp a month in advance?  Are you setting up drop camp in wilderness?  I wasn't planning on setting up camp until a week before.  With only 125 tags for the archery hunt do you guys think it will be that packed in Little Naches?  I haven't decided where to camp yet.  Will probably have a nice comfortable camp setup near where I want to hunt but I'll also be packing my backcountry stuff so I can stay out a few days if I want.

We have a wall tent for a base camp that we will be setting up lower in the unit, along a stream, from there the plan is to hike in different drainage's that way supplies will be close if we need to pack meat and folks that will be tagging along have a place to stay. don't really expect to see that many other hunters were we are hunting

Unfortunately we came up empty handed no big game tagged for the 3 of us, but we did manage to set the all time record for these furry little creatures, we had a great time spent with good friends and enjoyed every moment of our hunt, good luck to the muzzeloaders

Thanks for updating. We're the bugling for you? Seems like archery had a tough go.  I didn't fill my tag either but had a great time.  That's a crap load of mouse.  Yikes!

Even though the archery season was pushed back a week the bulls just were not bugling much at all the first week except for first light and right at dusk, the bulls were holding up high in big timber not responding to our cow calls until the last 2 days of the hunt we located a big bull in the 350 range that was hot, he had a few cows with him we just ran out of day light on the last 2 nights had him 85,100 and 150 yards but that dude just wouldn't stop moving, My 2 buddies hunted the entire time and I could only hunt 11 days, we had seen a mix of rag horn bulls and small spikes and 2 points but honestly we didn't even have good shot opportunists on them , I did however take a 70 yard shot on a 330ish bull that just missed high and my buddie missed at 60 yards shooting down hill at a 45% angle, our original plan was to hunt as a group with 2 out front and the caller in the rear, but our plans changed after a few unsuccessful calling attempts it was frustrating but loads of excitement, we had a few things blew our set ups that were beyond our control but that's just hunting and expected, I personally had a great time just being in the position to be able to hunt bulls, I most likely could have been more successful had I just stayed home as all my neighbors informed me of all the big bulls in there yards eating apples off the trees but I have to say that I had more fun spending time away from the phone, hunting with good friends, and eating gourmet food cooked in camp. Muzzeloaders should hit the rut just right.
