Observatory Bull Tag
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:53:02 AM »
While in Colorado on vacation, I found out I drew my first bull tag! It is in the Observatory unit. Took a cow in the Umtanum in 2011. Looking to scout there and in the Manastash. I'm pretty nervous, as it took so long to finally draw. My wife signed me up for a gym membership where she goes, hope to knock off a couple pounds and get some cardio in over the next few months. I'm going to take the scope off the .270 and make sure the base mounts are tight, and get her re zeroed in. Thinking about loading up a few with IMR 4831 to see if I can tighten up my groups better than my pet load of RL19.  If anyone wants to do a ATV ride/scouting trip, shoot me a PM. Also, A 300+ bull would be awesome, but I gotta say, I just want a bull, and an enjoyable hunt. Not looking to go B/C on my first branch bull. Just want some meat in the freezer and a branch bull to look at for years to come.

Lots of guys will be hunting the unit, tge steepest nastiest holes are where the bulls will be. There are some great bulls in tge unit but I think your goals are very realistic. I'm in yakima and don't have much experiance in that unit but if I'm out and about and see anything I'll let you know.

I was out in the 340 today and saw a herd down in the sage, they were about 2.5 miles away from me but looked mostly like cows and calves. Don't forget about the low stuff it holds more elk than most guys think.

Cows always down low by the hunting camps in the thick brush. They get pushed out every year and slaughtered.

Good Luck!!!  hope to see pics of dandy bull.

Not sure what rifle you have, but my savage .270 loves H4350 with 150 grain partitions.  I think I am loading 50 grains.  Shoots sub 1" at 100 yards and the partitions are devastating on game.

Went up into the Manashtash to look around a little. Sure is a pretty place. Also went around to the Wenas, and Mt. Clemens. Was good to re familiarize with the area. We took my friends Rav4, the A/C was nice. We would have melted on quads. Saw a pretty mean looking black cloud hanging over Mt Clemens, hope it did not produce any lightning, sure looked like it could.
