I just got some Lowa Hunters begining of last year & so far the best boot I've ever had. I laughed when I saw the prices of these top shelf boots & others like Kenetreks but I think they're worth it plus I got em on sale for about half off. They are tall, supportive, light weight, & very comfortable.

I am gun-shy about buying Kenetrek's because there are horror stories with any brand of boot.  I understand that there are comfort issues with anything with some people but if I bought a $500 pair of boots and they broke or leaked...I would blow a gasket of my own  :)

I have put many miles on my Asolo's, got them at rei. Had them for one long hunting season, still water proof, which is amazing to me.  Been a good boot.

What type hunting do you intend on doing? What time of year? What climate? These are important. If you plan on being in snow you will want insulation and a taller boot. If you plan to archery hunt and be in pretty much warm dry climate the shorter boots would be great. Shorter boots are lighter and allow a little more movement. I do really like the Schnee's Beartooth boots though. They are light and comfortable and will be on my feet this archery elk season for sure. I don't care what boots you buy you might as well spend the extra $40 dollars or so to get new insoles. These boot manufactures absolutely cut cost in that area and they will need replaced IMHO. You might look at Crispi boots as well. The Crispi Idaho is a really great lightweight boot as well.

I know that Ranch and Home in Kennewick has several styles to choose from and try on. Trust me you will want to try them on before you make a purchase.

Like I said, I am looking for something waterproof but not insulated.  These will be a Sept-October hunting boot.  I've got good winter boots for when the snow flies.

Early archery through MF deer and putting on high miles in uneven terrain is what I'm looking at.  I don't want a low boot because I seem to be good at finding wet grass  >:(

Lowa Ranger GTX are uninsulated, fairly lightweight, great fitting, waterproof (as long as you keep treating with beeswax), and really tough.

Got a pair of Zamberlan 980 OUTFITTER GTX RR's a few months ago.  They appear to be the real deal and will provide the needed support hiking in any terrain in the high country, and, with a pack full of boned out meat on my back. I can't speak to their longevity although I'm pretty sure they'll remain functional for quite a while.  I've also owned a handfull of mid priced boots that haven't quite stood the test of time, mostly Danners and a couple of Cabelas (can't remember the types).  All have lasted a few years and then failed in one way or another.  I still have a pair of Danner Pronghorns that I like for early season hunts but they will leak after brushbusting through our lovely wetside vegetation or skipping across a creek.  Looking forward to see how the Zamberlans do.

Yeah, I think I would go with a mid-height leather hiker and some gaiters for the specified use.  Gaiters when you need them, otherwise, pack them.

I am going through the same thing.  Was initially looking at Lowa Tibets, but ended up deciding on giving Schnee's a try instead.  Went with the Granite boot, ordered on Thursday morning and got them yesterday.  They are a stiff boot but very comfortable right out of the box.  Heel holds well and snug but comfortable throughout the rest of the boot.  They do have 200gr of Thinsulate in them.  If you dont want an insulated boot the Beartooth comes in an uninsulated version with an 8" upper.  It is supposed to be a bit more flexible than the Granites as well.  They use eVent for waterproofing instead of Gore-Tex.  Only setback with Schnee's is unless you are in MT, you cant try them on in store before buying.

I cant say how well they will hold up yet since I just got them but first impression and fit seems very nice.

Tough finding an un-insulated Gore-Tex boot that has an 8" + upper.

I am going to be a princess and refuse to buy anything I haven't worn yet.

Fit definitely has a major impact in a boots performance. Run to whites and have someone there fit you and talk with them about what you want and they should be able to reccomend some options. They sell lowa there I believe.
