What do you carry in your 44 mag?
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:32:45 AM »
What do you all carry in your 44 mags when out and about in the woods?  I have my 5.5" Redhawk loaded with Speer Gold Dot 270Grn over a decent amount of 2400 powder. Any thoughts or on-game experience with the 270Grn Gold Dots?

You obviously reload.  I would go with a heavy HC in Semi Wadcutter design juiced to the max in bear country.  For every day normal the same bullet design in a midweight at the upper end in FPS.  Don't pay for the Garrets as they are insanely expensive and you can duplicate their performance.

Hornady 300gr XTP over a decent amount of your favorite powder.

I carry 240gr gold dots normally, I haven't seen a bear in this state that they wouldn't put down. If I went to Alaska  I would carry with at least 300gr though. The 240gr bullets do penetrat pretty good, I shot them in to a log and they went in just as far as the 300gr bullet did. :dunno:

For just carrying when in the woods, or during deer season it is 240 gr. XTPs.  During elk season or when bear hunting, I go with Sierra 300 gr. jacketed softpoints.(these will not expand on thin skinned animals)  They shoot to the same point of impact in my redhawk out to 50 yrds.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
