Hope to get called out in Sept so it doesn't interfere w/my blacktail addiction.

We are qualified archery, crossbow, slug gun, high power rifle and handgun.  What ever area comes up we will be qualified to be called out for.

That was a pretty epic write-up, but I'd double-check that permit if I were you.  None of the Master Hunter hunts allow antlered elk.  They're ALL antlerless.  :sry:

Good luck on your hunt with your daughter--it sounds like a great opportunity to fill the freezer!

This is a real hunt to me.  It is an opportunity to achieve WDFWs objectives of hitting the herds near where they lay up while giving me an opportunity at a mature bull.
Can you please clarify what hunt this is? All Master Hunter permit hunts are antlerless.

:yeah:
I  know of areas where herd composition is out of whack due to irresponsible management that are allowing bull harvest, not mature bulls though.  So far they are targeted cull bulls where the wdfw retains the antlers.(not region 6)

Mental telepathist, are ya.  Why a sooth sayer like that you should be staring in your own reality show.  //s

You don't know anything more about my motivation than the man in the moon.

What you conveniently have missed from what I have said is:   "I'm a team player when that is what I signed up for, and if they want me to chase the herd out of the area and take "any elk" just to press the point home - that is what I will do.

I will still have my General Season tag.  "Any elk" will feed the lil' Hasty chillens for another year, and they likes them some meat."

Damage control hunts are all different and you are correct, actually almost correct, not all but most of the opportunities are for antlerless animals.  But in some cases the WDFW is trying to completely eliminate a band of elk that is in an area in which the presence of elk is totally incompatible with where they are located.  As an example: There are areas in which few people expect to see elk and their presence poses an unacceptable level of risk to the motoring public.

Not that it is any business of the individual who thinks they are all knowing - FYI, I did volunteer work for WDFW long before joining the Master Hunter Program.  This will be the first time I have been called out and I consider it a blessing to be able to have the opportunity this year.  We have a new baby and I have used up quite a bit of my vacation leave already.  Being able to take advantage of this opportunity will allow me to spend time actually hunting big game in the field, w/in an hour or so drive from our home, with my six-year old daughter and for that I am thankful.

I can't tell if you're an unusually verbose troll, or if you're actually serious.  If you're trolling for Master Hunter-haters, well done.  If you're actually a Master Hunter, it's about time to man up and admit that you misread your permit.  It's "Antlerless," not "Any elk."  If you happen to be called out during your general season in a unit that's open to antlered critters for your weapon type, then yes, you could legally take an antlered critter, but that's pretty unlikely to be well received by the conflict specialist/WDFW.  Master Hunters catch enough flak already without wackadoos spouting off about shooting herd bulls over COB during a damage hunt.  If you're not a troll, and this is your first MH hunt, keep your head down and make sure you don't screw anything up, please.

I had spoken with a Master Hunter and who participated in a hunt in which the WDFW wanted all elk removed from an area and that he had actually shot a mature bull.  He wanted to shoot a bull, he worked at it and he was successful.

What I had written is that I hoped to be called out on a hunt of that nature.

In order to end any further controversy I have elected to remove what I had posted.

The conversation was taking place place in Welcher's Gunshop in Tacoma.  I was in there buying something and one of the other customers had a photo of a mature bull elk he had taken on a damage removal hunt.

He said that the WDFW wanted all elk removed from that area and so he decided to try to shoot a mature bull and he was successful.

He may, or may not have offered more information on where the hunt took place, I think he did, I am almost 100% certain that it was in Western Washington because I think I remember the vegetation in the photo being "western Washington" looking, but I honestly don't remember more details.

Thank you JD, just looking for clarification.  I know of several "master hunters" who shot bulls in the program that resulted in revocation of their master hunter status.

I still perplexed what this "callout" hunt is. Are you talking about a Master Hunter permit hunt as listed in the big game pamphlet, or something else?

 :yeah:

Maybe this was a landowner tag that he had given out by the state based on wildlife damage claims?

I'm assuming hunt 2717 on page 63.

That hunt is clearly antlerless so it must be something else.

Well I am sorry for starting a sh*tstorm over this.

In the post I deleted I clearly stated that I hope that this is how it plays out.  I can dream and
hope, can I not?  If hoping is against the rules, I doubt any of us would hunt.

I also clearly stated that I am a person who plays by the rules and am a team player and whatever WSDOT sets as the rules that I will be grateful for the opportunity.

Up until the point that I talked to that individual I too was unaware of any conflict/removal hunt that allowed taking of mature bulls, but the individual who I was talking to said that the objective in this case was to remove a small band of fifteen, or so, elk completely from the area.

It was not my conversation and although I joined in, I did not butt my way into conversation with the gentleman.  I basically was complementing him on the elk in the photograph and listened as he talked to others about it.

IIRC he used a muzzle loader because it was in a forearm restriction area.

Jd, the post you deleted was far more in depth than a person with "hope".

I would suggest that the best thing you can do it not post again on this topic.

You apparently failed to read the very clear information in the game pamphlet about what a legal elk is. It's got nothing to do with "hope", unless you are hoping to break the law and not get caught.

Also, WSDOT manages roads, not wildlife.

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.
