Who has had Diesel EGR Maintenance? How much did it cost?
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:09:12 PM »
Surprise Surprise!  :yike:
I've owned Diesels for 20 years and just learned my truck 2009 Dodge 3500 EGR needs maintenance. Had truck serviced before going camping for a week. No issues mentioned. Fueled up in Montana and "check engine" light came on. Called Dodge and they said most diesels have this maintenance hit about 65,000 miles. Told me it will cost $600.  :mgun:
So after doing some research, I see its another one of these damn emission standard gatchets that will cause you to loose power, fail emissions and etc..
Similar to the sensors I remember replacing in Toyota's that a Mechanic can replace. What a butch of BS! I watched a video online where a guy changed it in 12 minutes, minus the soak time. So what the hell is the $600 going for?
If anyone near Spokane has dealt with this or dealt with Davis Diesel, let me know. They aren't giving me the $600 quote. That would be Dodge. I read a couple bad reviews on Davis today and I'm now skeptical.

I got lucky on my 2012 f350. 1,000 miles before warrenty was up had the check engine light come on for the EGR. Got it replaced free.

Good luck.

You should delete it now. It will happen again if you don't.

There is a EGR maintenance due at 60k on those but we never sold it. Never had a problem.
P.S. No way should any dealer be telling you over the phone that's why your check eng light is on. Too many possibilities

Get the EGR delete done with EFI live.  Edge tuners are notorious for high EGT's.

99% guarantee your light came on for EGR cooler issue and not an EGR maintenance thing. Ford has no EGR maintenance interval.

Ur prob right. It had something to do with it leaking fluid. I don't know much about the stuff other than it's a PITA.

If the truck is out of warranty I would look at doing the emissions delete with EFILive.  I did my 2012 Cummins last month and it runs like an entirely new truck...no more regen BS and emissions related problems.  Plus I get 22mpg now! :4w:

Can you legally delete the EGR and have it still be on road legal?  I'd check into that before I did it.  I had to replace EGR cooler on my Ford Diesel and the EGR cooler delete was a no bueno and I could cause myself big problems when I was ready to sell.

Also, they told me excessive idling was a killer for the EGR cooler.  Told me idling cakes up the passages of the EGR cooler then they overheat and crack, causing coolant to leak into the exhaust.  On my Ford the replacement parts from BulletProof weren't that bad, it was the labor that sucked.
