how big is this bass
« on: August 20, 2015, 08:34:44 PM »
I finally fished this pond I found and caught this bass tonight on a rubber crawdad. It was roughly just over a hand width apart and just over three long. You figure this is a bass over 6lbs. Thing was pretty heavy.

Im guessing is was at least 24" long. I missed some others that looked like they were bigger. Will bring a soft tape next time.

I tend to make my guesses on the smaller end of the possibilities esp if its my own fish.
I am bad at guessing not knowing the size of your hand and not having something else to judge it against. I would say 5.5 is a good ballpark. But hey whats a half a pound either way anyways haha.
Here are some, look at what you can see of my hand since yes I am guilty of long arming in pictures.
2 4.5 pounders (weighed on a scale) from last summer and one 5.8 pounder (also scale weighed) from my chubbier days of highschool.

The formula is (girth x girth) x length ÷ 800 = weight in pounds.

Let's guess your hand from tip of pinky to tip of thumb (as pictured) is 6 inches and the length is 24 inches as you said... I'll add 2 inches to the girth for thickness we can't see, that would equal (14 x 14) x 24 which equals 4,704 ÷ 800 = 5.88lbs.

This formula is remarkably accurate, carry a soft tape and you can get pretty dang close on all your bass!

Tip to tip on my fingers is about 8".

Thumb looks to be over by about an inch so use the formula at 7" plus 2" for the girth.

It's all guesstimation at this point as you don't have accurate measurements for length or girth :dunno: but that formula with accurate measurements is pretty spot on!

As mentioned by others I have also caught some bass that made up for in girth what they lacked in length and some long lanky bass that didn't do great on weight.

For instance, a 7.9lber I caught once was 1.5 inches longer than an 8.6lber I caught the following year, the 8.6 made up for it in girth! Carry a soft tape or spend $25 on a decent digital scale are the best ways.

Nice fish by the way
