Rainbows on bass gear.
« on: August 22, 2015, 10:29:51 AM »
Has anyone else done this? I went to a lake yesterday that holds largemouth and rainbows. My first rainbow was on a 2/0 barbless hook with a green Gary Yamamoto 4" Yamasenko worm. I pulled in a nice one on a large white spinner (lost an even bigger one), pulled 2 in on a fluorescent green grub, and my last one was a cut down plastic worm. The smallest fish pulled in (my brother's fish) was just under 16". The biggest (unfortunately, also my brother's fish) was near 20".

Has anyone else ever caught land locked rainbows on trout gear?

Nice catch  I have never caught trout on bass gear but catch bass on trout lures quite often.  :)

we have a lake over here in the basin that we troll with level winds and gear heavy enough to be bass or light steelhead outfits.   Two years ago we had 10 lb test broke 3 different times.

Thanks. I was really amazed to see an 18" rainbow come out of the water instead of the monster largemouth I had convinced myself was biting. I apparently  have a hard enough time catching bass on bass gear. I haven't tried trout rigs for them. This is something I should give a shot.

Caught a cutthroat on a buzzbait once!  :yike:

I have caught numerous trout on bass gear over the years, especially crankbaits, Rapalas, grubs and spinnerbaits. The cutthroats up on Lake Whatcom are especially aggressive!

Yeah, trout will sometimes hit anything.  I hooked a 7 pound cutthroat out of Island Lake in Shelton while cranking a crawdad colored Bomber.

I have caught some of my biggest sea run cutthroat and rainbows on Rapala's and Cotton Cordel's Big O deep diver.  In fact, the deep diving Big O worked so well for sea run cutts and big rainbows that when they discontinued that model I bought out all of their remaining stock which was about 230 lures.   :chuckle:  I probably still have at least 40 left.
