Montana bow elk unit 310
« on: August 25, 2015, 08:57:36 PM »
I'm headed over to scout in the next couple days to the Gallatin (just northwest of Yellowstone), unit 310.  I've got an archery tag for elk (and general deer).

Anyone know this area?  Do I take my 4-wheeler or my mt. bike?  I'll be setting up a trail cam up in high country, hopefully around water.
Getting excited!!!!

Anyone know this area?

Get a forest service travel map and you'll learn transportation restrictions. Be bear aware.  Carry spray. A guy I used to know hunts elk in this district.  We are still Facebook friends and he posts once and awhile about that area.  Sounds like they get into elk.  Cabin creek I think.

Trail cams are taboo once season opens. Just saying :dunno:

I looked at my Gallatin National Forest west half map and there are some trails open to ATV's.   Just no driving off the trail.  I would take your ATV, the trails go a long way in.

LOTS of grizzlies in that area. Go prepared.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

I got back from my quick scouting trip to the area yesterday.  Saw no elk, found some small bucks.
As I was starting up the trail, I ran into a sheep tag holder that had found 7 grizzlies in the past 2 days.  One that didn't want to run off, and kept circling his glassing area.

It looks like great elk country, but I think the wolves and bears have the elk in the area a little more quiet.
Can't wait to get the season underway!
