I don't have that model but I have the cva buckhorn. I used musket caps for a little more heat than 11s and used hodgdons 777 in ff for 50 cal.

But TODAY a number 11 Mag Cag cap or a RWS 1075+ cap produce the same heat as does a Musket cap - especially since they have moved back to re-enactment caps.

But with the new Western CVA's I do not think it matters they only come with a Musket cap nipple...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

That's good to know, I was just going off of the older information, of course it's been 4 years or so since I hunted with muzzleloader and my dad had helped me get stuff. I think it had been 20 or so since he hunted with his so based on his knowledge a musket would be hotter. I think with the online versions these days it also helps with it all going forward vs lighting from the side.

In his day the musket cap was definitely hotter than a regular #11 cap - well that is even true today.  But with the advent of the #11 Mag cap that all changed.  There is another cap a RWS 1075+ ( a German cap) that is even slightly hotter.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I like the #11 mag or the 1075..found in my guns the #11 seems to stay on the nipple better then the musket

I definitely prefer the loose prefer instead of pellets, letting you be more precise with your loads, plus the pellets need a HOT IGNITION source plus leave a residue ring more so than powder I believe

Blackhorn 209 with a little sprinkle of 3F stacked charge #11 works good here

Duplexing BH with another BP powder will certainly work - just not quite sure why you would want to take the extra-time to do that especially in a hunting situation.

For range shooting it would be easy enough. When you are loading just drop 5 grains of a BP or a BP sub and then drop the BH on top of that.

I have always been under the impression that you needed a 209 primer to ignite the BH, but I guess that is why your using the 3f... Sorry if that was a stupid question.

You do need a hot ignition source to ignite BH - and a 209 shotgun primer is widely used.  Percussion caps do not create enough heat.

But if you ignite a pre-charge of BP or any of the regular BP subs - with a cap - the pre-charge will ignite BH to complete the ignition.  Again I am not sure why you would want to go through this process but it does work.
