Saw a photo yesterday from a buddy who has a cabin east of Grouse Flats. He was down doing Fire Protection around his place. Had about 150 elk heading east.

0% contained??
I swore inciweb showed it at 5-10% last week?  Must have jumped the confinement lines? :bash:

I read the bold portion and didn't read it all. Glad I misread it!

...UNSEASONABLY COOL TEMPERATURES LEADING INTO THE WEEKEND ...

AN EARLY AUTUMN LIKE WEATHER SYSTEM IS SETTLING OVER THE REGION
AND WILL REMAIN THROUGH THE BEGINNING OF THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND.
THIS WILL LEAD TO UNUSUALLY COOL CONDITIONS THROUGH THIS PERIOD
WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE COLUMBIA BASIN IN THE UPPER 60S TO
MID 70S WHILE THE MOUNTAINS WILL SEE 50S AND 60S. OVERNIGHT LOW
TEMPERATURES WILL ALSO BE COOL WITH 40S IN THE BASIN AND UPPER 20S
AND 30S IN THE MOUNTAINS.

A COLD FRONT WILL BE SLOW TO EXIT THE REGION OVERNIGHT AND EARLY
THURSDAY BRINGING A CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION TO THE FAR EASTERN
MOUNTAINS. THE BEST CHANCE FOR A MORE WIDESPREAD RAIN WILL COME
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AS THE HEART OF THE COLD AIR MOVES OVER THE
FORECAST AREA. PRECIPITATION TOTALS OF A QUARTER TO HALF AN INCH
WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH SOME MOUNTAINOUS AREAS RECEIVING UP TO AN
INCH. SNOW LEVELS DURING THIS TIME WILL LOWER TO AROUND 6500 FEET
WHICH MEANS THERE COULD BE A DUSTING OF SNOW IN THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS OF THE WALLOWA, ELKHORN, STRAWBERRY AND CASCADE
MOUNTAINS.

THOSE PLANNING OUTDOOR ADVENTURES SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THE
COOLER CONDITIONS AND THE PRECIPITATION.

Any last minute words of wisdom on whether to keep it or not? I've only got a couple hours before I have to choose! I have no idea what to do.  :bash: I know they can get an inch or more out of the system moving in there today and tomorrow but do you think that they will truly open the wilderness if they get 2" of rain or do you think it will remain closed?

I would think that they will still take some time to evaluate things even if we get 5in of rain.  :twocents:

Send it in. Get your points back. Have a good solid cry and you can get back in the game and look to draw again.

Spruce Springs SnoTel reports 1.4" of rain in the last week at that station.  Touchet SnoTel (near BlueWood) reports only .6" of rain in the past week.  Those are the 2 closest reporting stations.  I don't know of better actual rain intel than that.  Predicted rain reported by NOAA for tonight through Saturday night is predicted between .25" and 1.1" of rain for your permit area.

Even if they get the weather to put the fires out ,which is highly unlikely , the safety issues with falling trees and everything else makes it highly unlikely the wilderness will reopen in sept. It would kill me but I would turn it in if it were me. Sorry man

That what FS told me here in Montana
The snow will put the fire completely out
Even if its same as far as fire goes the FS won't open it for liability seasons: falling trees, flare ups, and what not

After the fire is all out and a couple good fall storm fronts come through (Oct/Nov) They feel better about opening it.

Wow....so I just got some more info that hugely impacts my decision. So I am keeping my permit. So if you mail it in today you are guarenteed your points back but if you keep your permit and they don't open it you will still get your points back at the end of the season. But if they open it for even 1 day you lose your points.

That makes the decision a whole lot easier. I'd do the same and keep the permit, if I knew I had the flexibility to run over there on a few hours' notice.
