They are only the dumbest bird on earth if your potting them for the meat but as a game bird over good dog they are some pretty great birds.  Pheasants and quail are pretty dumb if your potting them along the road with a 22 out the window.

If I'm hunting them over the dogs I never sluice one on the ground, if I'm back in the bush running a trapline I have no problem potting one with the pistol, they make a nice change from beaver liver, legs and loins or muskrat legs.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

Well hard question. I love them all. And always take some time figuring out which one to take. Sometimes I take several and switch off.

.22 marlin with scope
Circuit Judge
Judge
20 ga SA 08
.410 break action

Wow hard choices for me.
When ever I open the gun cabinet they call to me. Take me ,take me. It's funny they all have female voices whispering to me softly , over here big boy.
Hey there fella. And their smell is intoxicating .
Oh god and after you shoot one that burnt powder smell over powers me.

Damm I won't sleep tonight. Better go grouse hunting .

.16 gauge shotgun I bought years ago.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

12 gage benelli nova with #3 shot.
Have a few BB shells along in case a Grouse is far.
.22 pistol along with CCI Stingers in case of a "close one".
