I'd say pick a place you'd like to scout and hunt. Spend the weekend there, eat at the local restaurant, go camping in the area, get supplies at the local shops, maybe even go to church there a few times when you are visiting. Remember names. The idea is to be social and let people get to know you a little, to even like talking with you. If your son needs to take hunter ed, take it in that area. Talk to the game warden or biologist that works in that area. Sometimes there are volunteer projects which could result in access if you make a good impression.
