Elk? GMU 448?
« on: September 26, 2015, 10:19:33 PM »
So I finally went and checked my trail cameras today after almost 4 months of not having time to get to them. It took some time to go through nearly 2000 pictures (mostly small trees blowing in the wind) and I came across this picture of what appears to be an elk. Both me and my 2 hunting buddies have spent some time looking at it and we aren't 100% certain but we think it is an elk. The only thing is I was under the impression that there weren't any elk in this part of the GMU? What do you guys think?

Well I'm not going to give specifics on location but it was in the Granite Falls area. Is that unheard of?

Never heard of them in that area, but I'm not suprised.  Seen them in the lake Rosinger area.

There was a big bull spotted out here a few years ago bewteen Granite Falls and Lake Rosiger. It would be great to see the population grow around here too. Last week I was bear hunting and ran into a guy who said he was elk hunting. He had a rifle though  :dunno:

You have a great find.

Here is what the WDFW say about it.

Glacier Peak Wilderness is very remote, but holds great up-country game.  Early season deer and elk can be found in pockets and feeding in the open meadows.  Follow any one of the trails in the extensive trail system and hike.  Get up high and glass in the early morning.

Well thanks everyone for the input. Maybe one of these days I'll get to see him myself and not just a picture!

Could possibly find him with some cow calls and maybe a bugle right now if you really wanted to. I have seen some up towards baring.

Heard a lot of stories about elk.  Some are killed in 448 every year, but whoever is killing them is probably looking at this thread and not saying a word.  I talked to the bio and they are said to exist in the Sauk Prairie area and near the Gold Bar area at times, but infrequently.  I've heard of people seeing them in the Lake Roesiger area and hunted around there a bit with no sign of elk yet, but there's no reason they couldn't be around.

I get the feeling loggers run into them and don't say a whole lot and then go up during the any elk season and wax them.

I don't think there's many/any resident animals there, but just like the Whidbey elk and that one hit off of Starbird road, there's no reason elk shouldnt be more prevalent in 448.

Hope you run into him!

I doubt it in about an hour south east as the crow flys. But I'm no expert.
