HARD closing bolt Remington 700 extractor issue

So I've been struggling with closing the bolt over a cartridge in my .300WM Rem 700.  All evidence points to dirty extractor.  That thing fits in there pretty tight!  It's the riveted version, so how do i clean behind it?  Is there a solvent or cleaner that works best?

  You need to have it looked at by someone who's trained to work on guns.Remington bolts and triggers aren't the part of the gun that us amateurs should be fooling with.There are some good  gsmiths in spokane listed on older post here and It won't cost very much to have it checked out. If you reload  you could have streched  cases puting the shoulder forward enough to make the bolt hard to close,too.Factory loads should close with no resistance so maybe your extractor is worn or has need of a good hosing down with solvent .I have had to replace all the bolt parts,trigger,stock,etc.. The only originol part on mine is the action and bolt frame after hunting with it for 40 years.It was given to me by my BIL back in '76 and it was from the mid '60s but not shot much.I used it in many hike in hunts in the cascades since '79 so its been broke more times than I can remember.Good luck .

it's fired and new cases.  bolt opens and closes fine without a shell.  I'm 99% sure it's the extractor. 

Sharp Shooting is just down the road from work.  They're about the only joint in town anymore.  I'd never darken the door of Brock's or Mountain Shadow again, and Roger Biesen is all but closed up.  Anyone had SS look at their rifle?

I  had a similar issue with a model 700. It was rust/corrosion in the chamber.

Remington extractor replacement is pretty easy once you remove it you must replace it with a new one.

U need to act now if you are going out on the High Powered Deer hunt. Get a larger cal.bronze brush and get that corrosion out of the chamber with lots of solvent and sweat to clean it up. I usually soak the heck out of my guns after 2 weeks of hunting every year and then wipe and get everything off of  them before putting them in the safe.Lots of luck and always carry a back up gun or 2 as we all fall and bang our gun when  really hunting.I usually hike in at least 1 mile and often more than 2 so my guns take a beating. I once had to use bandaid tape to hold my stock togather after falling with it on a scree slope but still shot  nice buck,lol.

If you are shooting handloads make sure the bullet seating depth is correct.

Bolt closes easily once the shell is captured by the extractor.  Chamber is whistle clean.  It's a sticky extractor.  I've been directed to two different gunsmiths in the area.  Gonna give them a call today.

Wow, have never seen that style extractor before.  They have a bolt now with a similar extractor that doesn't have a rivet, just a half ring that snaps in a and out of the bolt face.

yeah, new guns have the no rivet version.  I found a guy locally that will do the work for me.     the jig from brownells is like $90!!!

Dumb question here. If you're shooting reloads, have the cases been trimmed to length? I trim to length plus a grand or so.

reloads and factory.  once the shell is captured by the extractor, the bolt closes as it should.  it's that jump over the rim of the case that's the problem.

i had the exact same problem with my 700 30-06. no matter what I did I never could get it figured out, so I had benchmark turn it into a 300 rum and put a ptg bolt in it. not helpful at all but man I love that gun now

Is it tearing up your cases? Can you measure your fired case and smoke a new case and cycle it to see if it's a interference issue. If you pull the bolt and push the extractor twards the bolt edge with a small screwdriver,  it should move.....but with resistance. While you're at it, push the ejector to ensure its not seized up too.

You should be able to  blast any debris from the extractor groove with carb cleaner and compressed air.

flaking off a sliver a brass when you force the bolt closed.  The plunger is free, but the extractor hardly wiggles.  I soaked the bolt and then hit it with brakleen, but haven't pulled out the compressor yet.  Thanks for the tip!
