Saw 14 deer yesterday
« on: October 23, 2015, 08:25:52 PM »
Like the title says but not a buck one among them. The strangest thing was a couple times the deer wouldn't even leave, just kept watching me at 30 yards even as I was walking by slowly. I'm not sure if they didn't smell me or the camo with orange vest confused them or they were just not scared of people. First time was 4 deer, 2 does with babies, one pair snorted and took off after I had watched them for a few minutes while they played. The other two just stood there and continued to feed. I walked past on down the dirt road and they were still there when I came back. The next time I was walking down a road and a doe was standing on the dirt pile from a ditched road entrance looking right at me and I had just peed and turned to continue. She walked off the pile of dirt and started feeding. I walked past her too and she never ran. Farther down the side road and I look back and she is on top a small ridge looking at me and only about 20 feet from where I last saw her. This is an area where there are hunters frequently so maybe they are not bothered and therefore not scared. Haven't seen this in this area before.

Sounds like a great place to hunt!

I've got does on my property that do the same thing.  I find the fawns peeking through or over the bushes at me as I walk around too.  Perhaps you look or smell like a person that frequents the area and they thought you were him.  If you don't act like a threat, they generally just keep their distance or move away slowly, but remain calm.  I'm hoping that will pay dividends once the bucks start chasing and the does (might) just ignore me.  They did seem more nervous last time I saw them, I'm guessing due to the bucks checking them out so often lately.

I saw 47 deer last night, only 2 buck and both were solid two points, very disappointing but glad to see the deer! No bucks for early season looks like it's late season for me!!
