Ideas for an elk hunt with my dad.
« on: November 01, 2015, 09:05:21 AM »
Reaching out to the members for Idea's.  Here is the situation, my dad has never killed a bull elk, he just turned 73.  He is a disabled hunter with a bad heart, he cannot walk very far, I don't believe he has many years left.  My dad the other day when we were deer hunting said he wants us to go on a hunt before he dies, a drop camp or semi guided hunt.  We cannot afford a fully guided elk hunt, it's just too much money.  As hard as it is to draw a tag in this state we are thinking out of state.  We have always talked about Colorado because of the numbers of elk there.  We have quads, he has a cross bow but I'm not sure the laws with them in other states, I don't think he could do a bow hunt without the cross bow.  He just has horrible luck when it comes to killing anything with antlers, I think he's only killed one or two bucks.  I think a rifle rut hunt would be his best option, or at least a rifle hunt in an area that has lots of opportunities.  Time is running out for myself and all the one's who have hunted with him for many years, waiting for his time to notch a tag on a bull. I'd love to hear your thoughts, I'm hoping BearPaw will chime in on this, I'm sure he's got a bunch of Ideas for out of state hunts.  PM's would be great, if I had a good area I wouldn't want to air it out for everyone to see, and I would keep it to myself if information is passed.  But if it's a semi guided or affordable guided hunt, I'm sure the masses would like to see.  Thanks for any help guys.

I'm going through this exact situation with my dad. He's 62 but in pretty poor health (cancer, bad back, just worn down) but has never shot an elk. The big difference is that he's a meat hunter and doesn't care about antlers. Bearpaw has the guided Utah cow elk hunts for right about $2K per hunter so that's what we're doing. I'm taking my dad and my 11 y/o son as a non-hunter the last weekend of January.

I'm sure that somebody will have some good options for you. Good luck with planning the trip

Andrew

That sounds like a great deal, I wish you guys the best.  My dad has killed cows before and small does, the family and I would just die to see him kill a bull.
