rodents stealing bait?
« on: November 10, 2015, 06:15:37 PM »
I have a couple racoon traps out with the usual sweet, fishy, oily bait. Traps have been out for a week and everyday about 4 ounces of bait is missing. Does this sound like the work of rats/mice? All of my trail cameras are in the hills or I'd use them to figure it out.

Mice, and spotted skunks are bad bait stealers around here. Rats are more common if your somewhere near civilization. Small birds can be a problem too if there is stuff like dry cat food in your trap.
Sounds like you have mice/rats eating your stuff if their not setting off the trigger.

Change your bait to marshmallows.  Raccoon love them.  Put either aa small hand full of large marshmallows or even better yet use the small ones put 3-4 small ones in front of the paddle out to the door..  Put some sweet lure like mint on a v stick and hang it from the top of the cage trap on the backside of the paddle.  Good luck

You could try hanging your bait so the mice can't get at it. Hang that mouse in there, everything likes eating mice. :twocents:

I tried that for a few nights and they were pulling marshmallows off a hook at the top of the cage. I'm definetly using that mouse as bait!
