spike for meat

went out yesterday with a friend's boy and tried to get him on a bull, there were 3 but he can't see very well far away even with his glasses on. went back today by myself and got a spike for eating. was happy as I walked up to it since I got what I set out after, I told an older gentleman who came to workout this morning that I was going out but had a spike in mind, he said "because you're going to eat it huh?" I got it about 4:30-4:40 but my phone chose to die at that moment and so I had to walk back to my rig and put it on a charger and only got one pic because it had gotten dark and I have never used the flash before. not a trophy but exactly what I wanted.

yeah but I don't have a cow tag and I've shot some bigger bulls in the rut and didn't enjoy eating them as much, I even use myself as an example when talking to kids in my hunter ed classes about the stages of a hunter's life, I tell then I prefer a small bull or cow if given a choice, if a BIG bull stepped out I wouldn't hesitate to take it , but my goal is always go for the table fare.

I shot a real old buck once, it was almost inedible. I am convinced it was not as tastey as the younger deer I have eaten. The 4×6 bull I shot this year is a little tougher than the only spike I killed, but not gamey at all.

I will always take the first legal animal that I see, small or large. I agree that the smaller/younger animals generally eat better. I think the only time that I will pass on a small buck/bull is if I have a special permit and I'm hunting in the rut where I have an opportunity to harvest a true giant. Otherwise, if its legal, it's hitting the dirt!
